Hey guys, just want some advice on how to handle this situation. This may be the wrong forum to post in, so I apologize if it is.

I graduated May 2014 from an ADN program. My during my last year of nursing school, I worked as a Tech in the ED at our hospital. When I graduated, the managers of the ED said I should get some Med-Surg experience as a nurse and then come back to see them. I've been on the Med-Surg floor for 8 months now, and I've been pulled to ED twice now. I miss it, I love it, and I feel ready to go back. Everyone in the ED tells me I need to get my butt down there. I feel ready to pursue the transfer now. My questions are:

1) Have I spent enough time on the floor per my resume? - I don't want to look like a job-hopper.

2) Do I need to dress up interview-style to go talk to the ED manager? We already know each other, I've worked for her before, etc. Just wondering your opinions.

3) I can't help but feel bad about thinking about leaving my Med-Surg family. lol :T

1. I would personally give the job at least a year before leaving. Also look at facility policy- some require a certain amount of time in a unit before being eligible for transfer to another.

2. An interview is an interview, whether you know the person or not. Dress appropriately as such.

3. We've all left jobs behind, meaning we've left coworkers behind as well. While it's a big change, it's just part of how the career goes.

I agree with giving any job you began as a new grad a year before transferring, especially if you aren't miserable where you are (you mentioned missing your med-surg crew, so Im guessing you aren't)..you've got just 4 months left. You can never go wrong with dressing formally for an interview. I was hired on as a new grad in the same ED I worked as a tech so I knew management. I still dressed formally when I interviewed for the nursing position.

Rose Queen is right. You are trying to show the NM that you are now ready to take on the responsibility of a higher role in the ED. Don't slip by being to casual.

I agree with the year mark from other posters, that said, there is no reason not to go talk to the ED manager now. "Hey just wanted to touch base, I'm learning so much, blah blah blah, but my heart is still here in the Ed, blah blah blah." More like dropping a bug in their ear rather than can I apply for this job type thing.

As far as what to wear, if you are just stopping in, I would do it before or after a shift, or on lunch if possible. Then you are dressed professionally in your work uniform, totally appropriate.

If you are called in to do an interview, dress like you want the job, no matter if you know the manager or not.
