Tips/Advice for New Nurse Manager for a Dialysis Clinic

Hi there can anyone give me some tips on making the transition from team leader in a dialysis unit to manager of a private clinic.... It would be greatly appreciated!

Specializes in Nephrology.

What were you doing as a team leader? Are you going to a different clinic? By private, do you mean a smaller company? Not sure what you are asking, but if you clarify, maybe you would get more responses...;)

Specializes in RN, BSN, CHDN.

One of the main focus's of you life will be on the Quality Improvement performance of your unit.

You will learn quickly about HR policies and procedures because there is so much behind the scenes that goes on with employees, you will wear many different caps. Keep a paper trail on everything.

Depending on what kind of manager you are replacing will depend on how much clean up you will have to do. If your staff feel nobody listened to them, they will beat a line to your door to talk.

If they had a good manager they will have expectations and it will take you a while to find your feet.

Did you get promoted within the clinic you already worked at? That will depend on how much work you will have to do to separate yourself from your previous role.

Dont tell your staff they can contact you when ever they need you-set times they can call you out of office hours. I had staff calling and texting any time of the day or night.

Now it is dire emergencies after and before certain times.

Be prepared to listen to more complaining than you ever thought possible. Depending how mature your team is how you manage the conflicts if there are any.

I don't know how much staff discretionary fund you will have, but staff love food especially on a rough day-Pizza etc. Show appreciation as much as you can, Dialysis staff work hard and it tends to be a fast pace.

The list is endless.

Hi there I'm moving to a small 4 chair private unit, from a 19 chair government run unit.

Thank you so much, this was really helpful! It's a brand new unit, but he same company, and I agree wi th the staff appreciation it's a must... I did alot of that as team leader in my previous unit!
