Has anyone returned to outpt dialysis after several years away?

Hi, all,

for various reasons I'm currently considering returning to outpt dialysis. I have about 5 years clinic dialysis experience, however this was several years ago. In the meantime, I have done some PRN inpt/acute dialysis (it's been a while, though) and some med/surg (which I still dislike as much as I did years ago). Currently, I'm looking for work and few places are hiring (except med/surg); however, there are dialysis openings.

I'm wondering if any of you have done the same - returned to chronic dialysis with a large provider after several years. How did it go - did you get adequate training (or any?), did you like or regret it, would you do it again - or are you still doing it? Why or why not?

There are serious drawbacks to outpt dialysis, one of which being the early hours which don't agree with me at all. But unlike in the hospital, I used to at least get breaks and lunch (imagine that)! So each setting has its pros and cons, like everything else. I have no illusions, and a paycheck would sure be nice.

I'm still considering it, although I haven't yet applied for any job. I'll let you know if I do.

Delana - nice to see you posting back here. You know I'm not a dialysis nurse but I would think they would welcome your experience.

I know with the bundle here rearing its ugly head that the big two HD companies are pushing for home hemo/PD as options to pts.

We are also seeing changes (big changes) in the labs we draw, the care that we provide (as far as nephrology goes), etc. More changes in the wings too.

truth be told, I was never far away, checking this board occasionally; I guess dialysis got into my blood :D

Since I've been out of the loop for a while I have no idea how bundling will affect the local company or what changes they may have made; I do know they're still hiring, but one cannot draw too many conclusions from that. It seems to me that the changes may be for the better or worse, and only time will tell (surely no one misses the bad old days of sucking every drop of Epo overfill out of single-use vials and pooling it :rolleyes:).
