Where can I find information about becoming a CDE?

Is it true that you have to have 2 years of practice as a nurse before becoming certified?

Are these jobs usually hourly pay or salary? What is the average rate of pay? (I live in Massachusetts).

American Academy of Diabetic Educators has a website. If you google the term you will get responses too. Requirements vary depending on who awards the certificate, but you do not have to be a nurse to be a CDE. Dieticians and Pharmacists are also eligible.

As for salary - depends on the facility if you work for someone. If you are contract you might earn more but it is more effort to get your client base started. I would think you should earn at least what the average nurse is earning in your market. My certification did not get me a raise, but that is not true everywhere.

As far as I know, you have to have logged in 1, 000 working hours dealing with patients with Diabetes and take an exam to be certified. I was offered a job as CDE, but I had already gotten hired as Lead RN at the clinic. The pay for a CDE in California is $45/hr; at least that's what I was told. Do I regret not taking it? Not really. I feel that I would be able to learn more skills and have more nursing opportunities in the future being a Lead RN.
