My end goal is to my Critical Care RN. I have googled it, but I am still unclear about how to go about obtaining the CCRN. Is there an actual program, or do you just put in the hours and take the test? Any help or suggestions would be great.

Go to the AACN website that has all the info on how to see if you qualify to sit for the test and how to sign up for the test :)

I would suggest meeting with your ICU Educator. You will as well need to join the AACN. Some hospitals will assist with part or all of the fees including the cost of the test. There is a minimum hours worked requirement and I think it's around 2 years in the ICU. I would highly recommend 3 months to prepare. There is a wonderful cd by Moseby called CCRN made easy. They provide many practice questions along with rationales for the answers. Obtaining your CCRN is an outstanding achievement. More importantly, it says to your patients and team members you are well prepared to handle critically ill patients.

Nobody likes the ICU nurses outside of the ICU unit. You have to have thick skin. There is a lot of battleaxes working in critical care, people with condescending attitude who don't give a flying f...k about you or your career. They will help you get fired if you make mistakes. Good luck to you.
