Speaking of safety in nursing at correctional facilities... Does anyone know the scrubs and shoes dress code for San Quentin (State Correcitonal Facility, MAXIMUM security, CA)? Thanks for any help in this area! I know there is no lime green, orange, blue or camoflauge. Prints are ok, but I'm not clear on prints with these colors in them? Are Crocs ok? I'm looking for nursing uniforms that I can shop for NOW, before the rush of the tb-physical-drug test-security clearance paperwork, and just want it out of the way, so anyone with experience in this area (especially at San Quentin) would be terrific! Thanks so much for any contribution you can make in this regard! Also, would love to link up with an LVN that also works there! Just need dress code information! I am so excited about this position that I'm coming out of my skin! Thank you for all who post in the correctional nurses forums, I have learned a lot from you! I LOVE THIS SITE!

Just go to the website for the california department of corrections and rehabilitation. It will answer all your questions. It's union, so you must POST for a job, and it's not really scary, you have correctional officers who share the responsibility of safety with you. They are the ones you must count on, and they on you. You must always be aware, and on your toes. Too friendly is not good,:nono: and you must keep a certain distance at all times, emotionally, physically, and everything else...hahaha....kind of the opposite of what we learned in nursing... you must always just be alert and aware of the sights and sounds around you, and to help keep the environment stable, so safety will not BECOME an issue you have to deal with. Proactive stance is best. This is not a job for the faint of heart or the nonconfrontational. If you can BUCK UP, COWBOY and RIDE THAT BULL, you can be one of us! We're a close crew and rely on each other for safety and security, as well as the san quentin way of doing things. I have the utmost respect :bowingpur for the nurses, supervisors, and correctional officers here at the prison. They are a group who is to be admired for their caring, concern, attitude and inner strength. :nurse: They have to balance everything else as well as nursing. Good luck to you, join us, we'd love :redbeathe to have someone on board with the same virtues and caring.

Hi to all you San Quentin nurses!

I am wondering if you have safety Iv's/Catheters there? I had an interview last week at San Quentin and forgot to ask them about this. The hospitals require it and I'm hoping San Quentin supplies them (if I'm lucky enough to be offered the position!). If not, do you all feel comfortable without them?

Thanks! :wink2:

I am an LVN wanting to work in TX in State Prision. What kind of pre-employment info is needed b/f getting on? Anyone have any practical suggestions making life safer inside and things to learn for our benefit?

Can someone tell me what's the process is like? I just applied and my score was 75% on the test. I have no idea if it's ok or not. How long does it take to get through everything?

Hi..I was wondering if you still are working at San Quentin..I applied for a position there and I just had some questions and I was hoping you could answer some of them. Let me know thanks! -Jena

Dear Fellow Nurses,

I AM DESPERATE! I got a form letter from San Quentin (since I passed the tests and all for the state) asking if I was interested in the job- you know- the same letter everyone gets who applies to the state. HOW DO I STAND OUT FROM THE MANY APPLICANTS?

I look poor on paper. I worked Labor and Delivery for 5 years, opened a very large and successful Spa for 8 years, went back to school and got my RN Rentry, then my BSN, and just graduated with the BSN. NO ONE WILL HIRE ME, I am considered a NEW GRAD. I did my clinicals all over again for the BSN, and feel that I learned a lot, but also, that it;s kind of like riding a bike, I didn't really forget. The only place that would take me is a home health agency that pays 21.00 an hour/ this is bottom of the barrel for CA wages for a BSN.

The deal is, my sister works as a forensic nurse, my mother worked in Compton at Juvenille Hall, I have an assertive and no nonsense personality that I feel would do better in Prison. This personality worked well in Labor and Delivery, believe it or not.

I am very petite, only 5 ft tall and 105 lbs, so I dont look the part. But, I really think Prison would be a good fit for my personality, and it already seems familiar to me from hearing my family talk about it so many years. The Psych aspect is ingrained in me for sure, emotional distance, watch your back, etc....

So, SQ is going to be flooded with return applicants in response to the open position posted. Anyone have any ideas??

I am so discouraged. I responded to every letter that Folsom sent out, called, and was never picked for interview.

I am severely underemployed, I really can not make ends meet, and like all of us, I expected a real nursing job after getting the BSN.

ANY POINTERS ARE SO APPRECIATED!!

Thank you from the bottom of my heart.

scrubs can be any color, the OFFICIAL CDC rules state no blue DENIM. crocs are not advisable, you need a good pair of tennis shoes as you do alot of running and need to prevent your elf from injury, protect your feet well.

I always wore bright colored scrubs in prisons. you are more easily identifiable as a non-inmate by the guntower officers with the shot guns.
