[color=#000040]how would you react to being taken hostage while working in prison?"

Having worked corrections for 12 years, and being in a couple of very dangerous situations, there is no way of being able to predict how we would respond. There were two staff members murdered during my time of employment. The question is not 'if' it is going to happen but 'when' it is going to happen. You just pray to God that you are not there when it does. However, earning the trust of most inmates by being fair, firm, and consistent at ALL times certainly increases the chances of coming out of it physically ok. Mentally you would never be the same - and that comes from talking to those who were taken hostage.

Old thread, lol. Concern for your safety is paramount, but largely I'd want to kill my captors. Being taken hostage really isn't a forgive and forget kind of thing...unless you're there long enough for Stockholm Syndrom, lol.

strategy in such situation depends on totality of variables. in a one on one situation in an unobserved room where threat of physical violence is displayed superior force is the resolution, by any means necessary, as grievous bodily harm is inferably imminent. in a group setting such as an inmate takeover of a section in which nurse or CO's are working, it all depends on the immediate action of the inmates. inmates making peacable demands are not hte same as inmates engaged in violent behaviour.
