Yale GEPN Fall 2010

U.S.A. Connecticut

Okay, I know it's early, but Yale is my first choice, and I'm already terrified that I'm going to screw it up. My goal is New England (although I'm also applying to Pace because they have this Science Summer thing for those of us who haven't taken anatomy yet), and I want to be a Gerontological Nurse Practitioner.

I eventually want to either have a mobile clinic for poorer older folks who can't afford more traditional options or who are home-bound, or make home-calls in some other way.

I think Yale will help me get there, but I don't think I'll get in. I have a lower GPA (but still above a 3.0) from UC Santa Cruz, and I spent the last two years teaching in Taiwan, only to find out I don't like teaching very much. I'm taking my GREs in three weeks and I'm starting some prereqs this summer.

I'm also applying to Simmons, Pace, Northeastern, MGH and Boston College.

Before I ramble on any longer, anyone else applying?

The interview was really not intimidating at all. The interview, mine at least, was just a couple of softball questions like "Why nursing?" "Why this specialty?", things like that.

Thank you Global Gouda - I appreciate the feedback!

Hi guys,

Wow this thread has gone on for *forever*! And so I feel this is appropriate to ask, though not GEPN related.

I currently work in the SICU at Yale. I'm looking for FNP schools. My questions for you are why did you choose to look at Yale? Lots of people seem to be looking at the top Yale/Hopkins/Columbia names and I'm wondering if they are so much better than every where else? Meaning, when I applied to undergrad schools, picking a specific school (ie Ivy leagues), was very important. But the vibe I've gotten regarding grad schools is that the institution is not as important, unless there is a negative reputation attached.

Basically, it seems like Yale costs a whole lot more than anywhere else... its private, big name, etc. Is the program so much better? I can't see many jobs focusing on the Yale name (well maybe to get you in the door for an interview)...

Thanks!!!

Hi GlobalGouda,

I hope this sends you an email alert as I would love a response from you! I was just browsing this forum and came across some of your comments. I am a recent RPCV, and I'm currently looking at BSN to MSN/MPH programs, and I've decided to apply to Columbia, Yale, and Johns Hopkins. I went to GW in DC and saw your other comment about wanting more guidance in grad school and I completely agree. I would really love to get some of your feedback about how your experience was at Johns Hopkins, please email me at [email protected] if you see this!!
