Why? Why do people act like that?

Ok so this is a semi vent.. I am still loving my job and the people I work with for the most part. Just a couple of things I have noticed while I have been training that just kinda tick me off..

Case 1 - Me and my trainer were washing done a total care stroke patient he could not move one side of his body. He also had lots of stage 4 pressure ulcers on his back and butt. While we giving him a bath and washing him down the nurse also was changing the wounds at the same time (its just easier that way we all helped each other out) Well the nurse had to get more gauze and left the room and when she did my trainer started saying wow shes doing a pretty ****** job.. The patient is coherent and could hear what she was saying the whole time.. Why would you say that in front of the patient.. I mean come on..

The same trainer (she is nice to me and really a nice person) because we have a big patient load will go into a patients room and start doing things that we need to do without telling that patient what we are doing. yes granted we do not have a lot of time and she just wants to get in and out but it can **** a lot of the elderly patients off and make them more reluctant to let us do what we need to do..

Case 2 - Another CNA on our floor who I worked with yesterday and was helping out totally throws around curse words like shes at a bar. Saying totally inappropriate things in front of patients.. Then proceeded to fight and argue with a nurse about transporting a patient to a different floor at the nurses station..

Don't people know common work etiquette anymore?? Maybe thats why whne i was interviewing they were stressing customer service because some people just really do not have it at all!! I feel bad for some of these poor patients and fellow co workers because it can make you totally uncomfortable!

the only time I leave a patients room with gloves on will be to take the soiled linens hamper to the soiled room and even then after im finished with a patient i throw out my gloves and put new ones on to take it to its room and then throw those out and wash my hands.

You would just think that people would have a little empathy and respect and common courtesy for people and what they are going through and why they are there and some work ethic I mean come on lol. I would never start talking about other nurses or my personal life while in front of a patient thats just crazy!!

Was just amazed that people act like that lol

I was actually going to say basically the same thing!! While working why talk about other nurses/CNA's, talk about your personal life, or curse? It's just not ethical and just rude really!!! I know that for the poor pt's in LTC's it's difficult having to have someone bathe you, change your diaper, etc as it is!! You don't need someone making it more awkward than it already is!!!

Ditto what tomc5555 said. The aide I described in my previous response doesn't practice good hand hygiene, as in, she'll change briefs, soiled with BM or not, without gloves and rarely do I see her wash her hands after she does a brief change. It grosses me out. She complains sometimes when I glove up before changing a brief; sorry, no one is going to get a UTI or c.diff on my watch because I chose to not glove up and wash up after I was done.

I don't think this is just a CNA thing, or work thing. People in general these days are rude, direspectful, inconsiderate, selfish, and I can go on for miles. Things have really changed, and what this place has supposably stood on as it's motto has gone down the drain.

Only one person at a time can we change anything, first being self and then consistanly trying to instill morals into our kids.

Maybe one day people will open their eyes!

In a LTC, most of the time a "trainer" is not the most talented CNA but the one who has the best rapport with the establishment or who has been there the longest.

Good thing is you can mange YOUR section somewhat how you feel like and not be as concerned. Good luck.

Like ctmed, its worth noting that the trainer isnt necessarily going to be the best CNA.

When I oriented, the aide who I was supposed to shadow the first time literally ignored me the entire shift. When a supervisor introduced me to her on the floor, she didnt even look up at me or say anything. A couple times I asked her a question, and she just shrugged and didnt say anything. She just ran around from room to room ignoring me, unless it was to snap at me for something.

I just smiled and put up with it and tried to be as polite as I could to the patients. Apparently the aide was angry because she thought I would be taking shifts from her. Crap like that is common, its why being a new CNA can be really difficult, you are almost always going to run into a few that are really crabby or bitter or overstressed. In some facilities, almost the entire staff can be like that. I guess its just the nature of the beast. Whenever Ive oriented someone I go out of my way not to act like that.

My best advice for you is to hold your P's and Q's and find an outlet for all that stress is accumulating on you. Like, just go work out even if its 3am.. Lol. I understand your pain though, but those CNAs wont last long. Even if they do an outstanding job and have been there for over 10+ years. Eventually someone will complain (a pt) to the right person and the LTC won't be behind them.

On the other side though, I feel bad for them. It just sounds like they need a vacation themselves - you understand that kind of work is real physically labor and emotionally draining, they themselves are probably just due for one.
