Teaching Hospitals/Grants to pay for bills

I just completed my CNA classes and have yet to take the state test. On that note, once I (hopefully) pass, I want to work in a hospital. My co-workers at my current job (not related to the medical field) are telling me to go to a teaching hospital. Of course, they cannot elaborate on what a teaching hospital is so I am always stuck wondering. :confused: Do you go there and learn hands on and get eventually get a degree? My mom's friend works as an LPN in a gov't VA hospital and she also said that once you get a job there, you never have to get a job anywhere else. I'm still confused.

Another thing they mention is that being a single mother (my daughter is 15 so I am running out of time for grants), I can apply to something that they gov't has that can pay my bills to get me through school so I can concentrate on FT schooling and not need to work. Are these myth's? It sounds too good to be true but if these 2 things do exist, it would help me out a lot and I could concentrate on school and have my bills paid at the same time. I don't know about nursing assistants, but a friend of mine that works for the VA and is planning to go to nursing school says that the VA actually has a program for its employees where they will pay your tuition and give you and check and you do not have to work AT ALL for them until you get licensed. So, basically, she does not have to work and will be receiving a check every week like she is and having her tuition and fees paid for.

Yes it is possible. But these grants and apps are a long process and don't always come through with enough to live on. (a few hundred dollars for the entire semester) But an education is worth all the hard work. Good luck and don't give up!

Have you had any luck on the single mom grant? This is the first I'm hearing of this one, my son is 3 this would work wonders for me. Let me know if you've found anything or even a name of the grant.

I haven't heard more about it but I take my CNA test on Oct 4th and then hopefully I will get hired on at a hospital (hopefully) and then I will get more info from the HR dept or other CNA's or nurses. I will keep this forum posted on what I find out.
