Pregnant CNA?!

    Hello everyone! I just found out I am pregnant. However, I also just started my job as a CNA at an Assisted Living facility - it's multiple mansion-like homes and each house has 8 residents. Some are total care and some just need to be watched here and there. Some of the residents require multiple people to lift them up and we also do all the cleaning, laundry and meal preparations as well.

    I'm not exactly sure how to approach the subject. Ill obviously wait a bit before I say something, however I'm terrified that they'll let me go once I come clean.

    Has anyone gone through this or does anyone have any tips? I had a friend who worked there as well and she's also pregnant but she had to quit due to some health complications that didn't involve her pregnancy so she wasn't much help.

    Any advice is appreciated!

    Well for starters, if they let you go because of your pregnancy, that is illegal. They can't discriminate against you for that and if they do, you can report them. As far as it be the beginning pregnancy, my only advice to you is to be careful with lifting and bending. You have to make sure you protect your little one while doing your job and also not over exert yourself. I wouldn't wait too long to find to speak on it but do it when you feel the time is best. Congratulations on both the job and the pregnancy!

    As Nathifalr stated, they cannot fire you for being pregnant -- that is illegal. Pregnancy should not interfere with your ability to perform your job as a CNA at an Assisted Living, though you should avoid lifting heavy patients and you should not care for patients who have shingles.

    All that being said, I would not tell your employer right now if you just found out you were pregnant. I would probably wait until you are safely through your first trimester and are done with your training/orientation period. Good luck, and congratulations!

    I worked up until the day I delivered my daughter as a CNA in LTC. I am now 8 months pregnant with my second as a CNA in a hospital. Very doable. Not easy but doable.

    Hello and congrats!!!

    I have a friend who is a CNA and is 6 months pregnant and thankfully she has a very supportive team that assists her with anything she may need help with. I do not think that they will let you go because you are pregnant. I cannot imagine how difficult this job would be pregnant, but you can do it!! Also, please, PLEASE, do not take this the wrong way -- but I urge you to be very careful if you have a patient who is combative and seek assistance or a re-assignment if possible. It is not worth harming your baby, I know from my mothers experience with her first pregnancy when she worked in a group home.

    Pregnancy is not a disability and there is no reason that you have to announce it at all...because the fact that you are pregnant will be obvious enough eventually.

    You are not dealing with dangerous chemicals or medications and you currently have no health issues. Therefore, no special accommodations are necessary.
