How to get a hospital job

Nursing Students CNA/MA

Published

Hi! I just completed my CNA and was really hoping to get into a hospital! Most want experience a few don't. I'm applying for all while I wait for my date to take my state test! Problem is I will get rejection emails the same day I put in my resume so I think it needs help! I think I may be missing key words that their software scans for or maybe it just sends my name to the registry right away to check to see if I'm on it.

I'm really not sure but I am sure my resume could use some work!

If any of you have pointers it'd be greatly appreciated!

I have no previous care in a medical type setting besides clinicals but I do have experience in childcare and was kinda trying to figure out a way to tie that in. I don't want to work in the children's hospital tho because I feel like I'd come home and cry every day!

I am continuing on to nursing and after my CRNA so getting into a hospital as early as possible would be great!

I am signed up to take a phlebotomy class in fall, but most hospitals here (Wisconsin) will train you to do phlebotomy as well and I only signed up to make myself a little more marketable!

I am not desperate for a job and kinda figured I'd be jobless this summer anyway because I'm holding out for the right position and after fall I was assuming I could get in a hospital as a phlebotomist. If I have to get experience in a ltc facility I am open to that but would rather not because it really made me sad! I'd rather see this people come and go I did have to deal with 2 deaths while in clinicals but never got attached so while it was still sad it didn't get to me as much as having to see people suffer everyday and the 2 were in such bad condition it was just better! Sorry for rambling just wanted you all to know where I stand and my reasonings behind what I want to do!

I began my clinicals today, sheesh I have been looking for jobs online for as soon as I am done but everything needs experience and I like you don't have any. :-( Ughhh. It can be discouraging.

I am not sure where you are located but uwhc in Madison doesn't require any a lot of nursing homes and cbrfs don't either good luck in clinicals it goes by so fast! I redid my resume I think it sounds ok I'll keep you posted! I really want in at froedtert they don't ask for experience but it's preferred I'm also being really picky about where I'm applying I loved the nursing home but in the 2 weeks I was there it broke my heart to watch these people daily and the ones that don't understand why they can't go home and then I had to leave them!!

CRNA? I said that my LPN year. It changed as soon as I found out they were increasing that program from masters to doctorate

status.

I heard the same about Certified Nurse Midwives as well. :(

The nursing profession sure does seem dedicated to supporting the revenue streams of higher education. Meh.

PS I've had the hospital CNA job. Bailed 7 months in, chucked the t-shirt, and consider it the best decision I've made in a long time. If you want one, more power to you, but I'm not going back.

Where I want to go it's still a masters if I can get off this stupid waitlist and get there soon enough! There are other masters programs close but at the cost of 50k a year and up I don't think so! So if they change it to a doctorates so be it right now it's sitting at 17k a year. I don't only want one I need one in a hospital! If I am able to get in there are tuition reimbursement and letters of recommendations etc that I need to get my education done ASAP! If I'm able to get tuition reimbursement I can afford a more expensive private university and I will need 2 years of ICU experience so the quicker I get my foot in the door the better! I have heard a lot of negative things about being a CNA in a hospital, but I can promise I have worked much worse jobs from the management lacking to the co workers being like a box of rocks to not even having a place to wash my hands! I feel like I could tough it out for time being! How did you land the hospital job? What experience did you have before hand if you don't mind me asking? Any pointers for me besides don't do it lol

Honestly? I had no experience at all. It was my first CNA job. However, I knew a couple people who got hired before me, also as their first CNA job. One volunteered before getting hired, and the other knew someone in HR.

Oh I don't have that luxury :( my family friend is the vp of the nurses union so I'm kinda hoping name dropping will help! I do have family that works in the hospitals, but my sister who has just finished her emt and is working on her paramedic has interviewed and they say they don't want her at the same location as family. I've been leaving them out on apps because they are distant step cousins and honestly won't interfere with me doing my job.

My advice, get more education. Very rarely as a cna can get a job in a hospital. Maybe apply for a clerk job while getting more education, that way you will be able to apply internally for a job. Cna classes aren't the skills hospitals look for, I went to a pct course directly after cna, and we did so much more....now I'm certified in phlebotomy, I can insert, flush and remove iv's, I can insert and take out an NG tube, insert and remove a foley, change and clean osteomys, provide enemas, major wound care..etc..and I'm still going for my Bsn and surgical assist degree. I also have my certification of billing and coding.

Look into snf's, snf's, ltc, or home health care right now.....at clinicals be the one who volunteers for jobs, always show you want to learn.

tomorrow I have an interview for a patient care tech job at a teaching hospital....a med surg floor....I did a rotation of clinicals on the floor, I made sure I introduced myself to the DON on the floor...and I helped and was eager to learn, but didn't pester like some other students did.

Are you located in Wisconsin? If so, where did you do your pct course? I am signed up for phlebotomy for fall. My goal is actually to get into a learning hospital I know a lot will teach you to become a pct or huc. I would like to be working by the time I start my phlebotmoy class in September I'm kinda going stir crazy at home!

My clinicals are over btw just waiting on a test date. I am in the top of my class and I do have letters of recommendation. Problem is most don't care about your gpa and a lot of apps I've done have had a place for a resume and cover letter no letters of recommendation but I did put they were available upon request on my resume.
