Board of Nursing

Nursing Students CNA/MA

Quick question....anyone have a problem with a background check, sending paperwork to the board and getting their license? Something from WAY back 26 years ago (small!) came back to haunt me in my old age! Just wondering as long a I do what they are requesting, that it will be acceptable. I am so, so worried. Thanks ~ :crying2: Please advise!!!

I didn't think the BON had anything to do with CNA certification. Go figure!

In any case, no one here can really advise you. Common sense would tell you that if you don't follow their instructions you won't get anywhere.

I have plenty of common sense, and am following what they are requesting. Just a bit stressed because this means the world to me and had not remembered - it was from WAY back. Believe me, I am going by exactly what they need. And yes, a CNA has to be licensed. Appreciate your advice, Dolcevita. Just trying to see if anyone has been through it.

I suspect all states vary in what they look at as a possible bar to certification as a nursing assistant. In my state (OR) there are certain offenses which, no matter how long ago they happened, will prevent someone from licensure. Anything related to abuse or neglect or endangerment (domestic or on the job or even to animals) is almost impossible to get around. They do look at each situation on a case-by-case basis, but an offense would have to be major to prevent someone from getting their CNA 26 years after the fact. Even if it's a minor offense, they may want to know details but that doesn't mean they will automatically prevent you from getting licensed. It's fairly routine here for people to have to explain any past criminal conviction to the Board, but there are only a few crimes that will blacklist you permanently.

Here's a link to the list of disqualifying crimes under Florida statutes. Keep in mind that even if you have a conviction for one of these, you're still allowed to appeal a decision to deny a license.

Thank you so very much, Lorelei. I thoroughly looked at each link and feel a bit better. I don't have anything to worry about - just need to send what they are requesting and should be fine. I need to concentrate on my exam soon to come! You have given such wonderful advice through your posts. I appreciate it and feel like I can now move in a forward direction. :yeah:Again, THANK YOU.
