Nurse Practitioner - Anesthesia in (Northern) Ontario, Canada

Nursing Students SRNA

Ontario, to the best of my knowledge, is the only province in Canada that recognizes the role of nurse practitioner-anesthesia. I am aware that University of Toronto 's Bloomberg School of nursing offers a masters degree in Anesthesia. Does anyone know of Ontario and especially northern Ontario nurse practitioner-anesthesia life- work balance, student loan forgiveness program and income/salary?

Specializes in Cardiothoracic ICU, Pediatric ICU.

There are Anesthetists in Canada?? Tehy must be only in military related positions. My understanding is that Anesthesiologists won't let go of that domain.

I am Canadian and would love to work in Canada as a CRNA. Let me know how!

University of Toronto's Bloomberg School of Nursing had started a sub-specialization in Anesthesia as part of it MSN program but unfortunately, the program has since fizzled out. After graduating it's first graduates, ( Canada’s First Nurse Practitioner in Anesthesia Care Program Celebrates Recent Graduates - Lawrence S. Bloomberg Faculty of Nursing) the program was suspended. I have spoken to one of the three Nurse Practitioners. She indicated that the well intentioned US-like model lacked structural support in Ontario and despite training, her role and income did not change. It will require legislation and mindset changes for the US model of advanced nurse practice in Anesthesia to be recognized and rewarded in Canada. For now, it would appear you have to stay in the US longer.
