GPA Requirements

Specialties CRNA

I have in other threads posted some incorrect information, and want to correct that. I checked with Tony Chipas (Director, Newman University). The required GPA at Newman and most other programs for an applicant is 3.0, NOT 3.5 as I had posted elsewhere. Just wanted to clarify.

Megan,

On my clinicals I see lots of CRNAs. Their scope of practice seems to vary greatly from hospital to hospital. At some hospitals, the MDAs start the anesthesia and the CRNAs monitor for the rest of surgery. I think in PA you have to be supervised by a physician but not necessarily an MDA. I subscribe to Advance-for-Nurses and they occasionally have ads for CRNAs. BTW, if you're interested in Jefferson, they have a link off their website for recruiting CRNAs-- it says the salary only starts at $86,000 though. I think CRNAs are WAAAY more in demand in the Philly area than NPs are. Any CRNAs working in Philly care to comment?

And no, I don't have an externship, I worked as a nursing assistant for 3 years but have no time to work now! Some people work as nursing assistants but I have no clue how they manage to do it and get their work done. This quarter is turning out to be incredibly difficult. If you're going to do a one yr. program my advice is not to work!!

Nikki,

Thanks for the info. I'm just trying to figure out how I can afford nursing school ON TOP of the college loans I'm paying. Loans look like the option. I'm financing my own prereq's right now and trying to eliminate all "unnecessary" debt by spring 2004 (which would be when I start nursing school hopfully! Thanks for your insight! Good luck in schooL!

Meg

Megan, if you go back to school full-time all your previous loans should be deferred. I know mine were.
