ACLS and PALS online courses - important

Published

I recall a thread in the not too distant past that mentioned the availability of online ACLS and PALS re-certification courses. While browsing online, I came across this piece of information that is available at http://www.acls.net/

ACLS.net Advisory

ALCS.net has received numerous inquiries about totally web-based Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification courses. ACLS.net strongly advises against such courses. Teaching ACLS and PALS involves intensive, person-to-person interaction, and hands-on practice in the use of lifesaving equipment.

Additionally, these courses are not approved by the American Heart Association and you will not be issued an American Heart Association ACLS/PALS card after completing such online courses.

"Vistaril? Never heard that one. "

Vistaril, aka: Atarax or Hydroxyzine

"How about some Versed?"

I asked about versed or chloralhydrate and pedi-dentist agreed that those work better, but carry more risks (and remember -- this is lil procedure will be in the dentist office).

"Pulse ox and O2 sound good. I remember when I got my wisdom teeth out as a college student it was conscious sedation by the oral surgeon. Everything was fine except puking afterward in the car."

Vistaril has anti-puke properties as well as sedation - will carry plastic sheet for the car ride home just in case :chuckle -- better yet -- take hubby' s truck

"I think I'd insist on someone besides the dentist to monitor me if I had to do it again." ---- OH YEAH! Am planning on "volunteering my services for free" - what do you think? .. Their 'policy' is that parents do not go back with the kids --hmmmmm - don't think so this time. Will call office Monday.

thanks for the good advice....Christine

just a quick question, might sound stupid but hey gotta give it a shot. I work in an office setting and do work with an anesthesiologist, and my doc but we do conscious sedation at times. i wonder if there is an online course for acls. i have never been cert before all i see is re cert. any answers or comments greatly appreciated. Also is it a thing that you must do in a class setting or could i do this online due to the fact it would be rare that i would ever use acls. I know sounds weird, but dont know until you ask right?

Wow, that's pretty damn expensive. I get it for free at the hospital, but as you said, it is a prolonged review process, which can be quite burdensome. Actually I think ours is 16 hours, but it's on hospital time, so I'm not complaining. I do think it's beneficial to go through the motions of a mega-code, and have a chance to do the hands on practice. I always learn something new every time I go, and not just because they change the regs every year, i.e. cpr/airway reps. Even for professionals who do it every day, it seems you always pick up something you should have done in a different code.

FYI for all -

If you must get an AHA ACLS card, here is a link. I did not know about this option when I renewed online with the course approved by the AANA. Have a look. It might fill the needs of those whose employers or schools require the ""AHA official stamp of approval" .

For what it's worth, I haven't had anyone question my cards. For better or worse, they look just like the AHA cards, minus the logo on the upper right hand corner.

If it's your first time, you ought to take a hands-on class. The online programs are more tailored to the experienced providers who are doing it for the ump-teenth time and use those skills regularly. The fact that it would be rare for you to have to use those skills is even more reason to learn it well the first time and get some good hands-on.

Good luck.
