Work from home? What companies to look at?

I currently work for a third party company doing telephonic case management for Humana Gold patients. I'd like to work from home due to starting back to school next year for my MSN/NP. Are there some companies that have flexibility like that, where I could drop kids off at school, work, then do a class during the middle of the day, then work, then pick up my kids, get them in bed and work again? If you know of any companies I can look into can you send me the names? Also I am not CCM certififed, i've worked exactly 1 yr and 1 mo under a CCM so I believe i am now eligible, but I only do disease case management (CHF, CAD, COPD, DM) so I'm not familiar with all the other aspects of case management and i'm afraid to take that exam and fail it. Is there an online course/study guide to get ready for the exam?

You can check the CCMC website to be sure of the requirements to sit the CCM exam.

The CCMC will tell you that they do not let the exam out to test-prep courses, and anyone who tells you they know just what will be on it is stretching the truth. There is an exam blueprint giving basic info about the types of questions in the handbook in the link above. There are a number of good books to check out, especially Weed and Berens 3rd edition. There are others depending on what you think you need to know. The CMSA bookstore has a lot of good references. You can also hook up c the local CMSA chapter and start networking c people who took the exam recently for some reassurance.

Thank you, I did download that already. I am seriously considering taking this in April when it is offered again to apply. Although I am also wanting to go to FNP school starting next year too, so not sure if I want to continue in this field or not. It would be helpful to have though so that I could work from home while going to school again so that I wouldn't have to totally give up my job. I have noticed online many "work from home" case management jobs prefer this certification!

I work for a large insurance company in FL as a CM, and I actually *just* got my CCM certification in August. I was hired into the position without my CCM but with the plan to obtain it within 2 years of hire. And I started working from home about 6 months into my position, after training was done and I felt secure in what I was doing. It's all telephonic, too. You're in FL too, right? I think I remember seeing that on another thread. We have a lot of disease case managers here as well, and all the managers are great. And I know a handful of former CMs from here who have gone to school while working, at least one who did ARNP/MSN. That's what I am planning to do as well :-)

Working from home has been a huge blessing. I have two kids, and while I certainly can't have them around during the day while I'm working (they are 5 and 3), not having a commute and the flexibility of already being at home while working - HUGE. My husband has a stressful job that often has unpredictable hours, and my employer is super understanding about being flexible with start/stop times during the day.

hahaha, well thanks for the suggestions, I live in FL so trying to find something is hard since i"m not in a compact state! =) I'll look into these though!

OK, you got me there. What difference does that make? If you are doing telephonic case mgmt you do have to have a license for every state in which you have cases, but your company should pay for the extras you'll need if you're not in and only calling Compact states. Am I missing something? If you move to another state you'll need to get a license there anyway...

It's also helpful for us who don't like to scroll up and down to see what you're talking about if you use your "Quote" feature. When you want to remark upon a post, hit that Quote button in the lower right corner, and all of it will appear in the new "Post Comment" window. You can always erase some of it if you don't want to respond to all of it -- just don't erase the codes at the beginning and the end that have the [ quote xbxuskvisrf ], so then the quotation ends up in the little box above your words.

Most of the companies I've looking into are wanting the nurse to live in a compact state already, so that's why it's been difficult to find a work from home here. I live in FL, and Humana and Flordia Blue have been about my only two options. I have emailed and called several other telephonic case management services, and yes they do offer to help pay for additional licensing, however, they want people who live in those states to begin with (like TX) and have a compact license already. I don't qualify for a compact license since I do not reside in a compact state. Therefore it would actually cost the company more money to hire me as I would need individual licenses for every state I would make calls to, versus someone who has a compact license and doesn't need but a couple other license endorsements for non-compact states.
