Lpn with a new Case Manager Position :)

  1. 1
Hi everyone, I am starting a new job in Case Management this Monday, 2morow! I am fresh out of Lpn school and just got my license about 2 weeks ago. They hired me and are willing to train me. I don't want to go in there looking like a dope, can anyone tell me what Case Management is really about, what should I research? Any good books about case management? Is it difficult? Please any advise would help. Thank you!:

Hey, lucky you is a maybe... hopefully you have worked with the patient's in an office or as an MT or Aide or tech position somewhere.

If this is through an insurance company then you will learn their computer system and go from there. The most difficult part( I think) is getting rapport with the patients you call. Since you have no face to face that can be difficult.

I too am in the process of interviewing with an insurance company and hopefully this will work out. It is difficult to get your foot in the door so be thankful you are not at a bedside somewhere...

What company are you going with? I know Humana was hiring many (175) in the Tampa area..

i was in nursing for over 10yrs before i was able to get in with the company i am with now. it's with injured workers for work comp. i typically work 60-70 hrs/week and it's nothing to pull all-nights 2x/week to meet deadlines.
best ideas are go get your time mgmt down pat, get an organizational system asap (customized to what works best for you) and get used to rejection. So many types of CM, it's hard to suggest more if we don't know that 'area' of CM you're going into.... but congrats! You'll get some experience and the sky's the limit!

I would be scared of a company hiring a fresh nurse...most case managers I know where nurses for 10+ years. I know after just 2 I got a good position with a high ranking home health care company as a nurse case manager, and it is all trial by fire. Good Luck. My best advice is to DEMAND a comprehensive orientation and find yourself a senior nurse to refer to.

Hi, yes it's an insurance company and so far I am learning a lot. I like the job and I get to talk to the members and do the head to toe assessment on the phone. It was weird in the beginning but I have been there for about a month and am getting the hang of it. Good luck on your interview! I was very honest in my interview and let her know that I don't have experience other then school but that I am an eager learner and that someone out there would give me a chance to prove it. It worked, she told me that she also remembered how hard it was for someone to give her a chance to start her career...nurse:
