by crrn03

I am currently taking an online class with Kaplan U for case management certificate..I so far feel like that
I am just reading the same material over and over, but just in a different book. Has anyone out there taken
the class or do they have any advise. I know that I need to sit for certification also, correct? I am an RN with an
associates, have been a nurse for 6+ years, before that I worked as a MA for 16 years...Please advise as the
best route to become a case manager.

Hi, I can't really help, because I am in almost the same situation that you are in, and I really need a friendly nurse that knows case management to help me sort thru info and learn how to become a case manager. How do you like the Kaplan course? How long is it? I live in a pretty remote location, Haines, Alaska, so would have to do something online. Let me know what you are thinking, now that you have another few weeks under your belt, so to speak. thanks so much for sharing.

First of all, you need to be eligible to sit down for CCM exam....for that you must have 2 years of experience as independent Case manager or 1 year of experience under certified case manager....you can look up the critierias at www.ccmcertification.org. I am also trying to sit down for the exam for month of August.....wish me best of luck

Hi Sunzzi,
The very best of luck to you as you sit the exam! Thanks for the info you provided....do you know anything about the Kaplan certificate program? Before I get to the "exam" stage, I need to work as a case manager, and do to that, I think I need an entry-level certificate...is this correct? If you have time to respond, I would look forward to hearing from you! Again, best of luck with the upcoming exam!

There are a variety of certifications out there... CCM (sunzzi mentioned it above) typically applies to all fields of case management, but it heavily stresses Work Comp, rehab, etc. The American Case Management Association, offers an exam and certification for Hospital Based Case Managers. It is a TOUGH exam. I took it twice, before I passed. Also now, a certification examination is offered by ANCC ( American Nurses Credentialing Center). All of these require a lengthy application process, a fee to sit for the test, and that you have been working in the field, usually for 2 years, at least. Typically, once certified, you must get CEU's directed towards that certification, to maintain it.I hope that helps.
