Mohawk RPN Program, September 2016

World Canada CA Programs

Published

Hi all,

I was wondering who will be attending the September 2016 stream of the RPN program at Mohawk and how your preparations are going.

I have submitted my OSAP application, as well as a financial profile and cover letter on the Mohawk site, applying for grants and bursaries. Both of these are now open for submissions.

I have my final Hep B shot next month and have vaccination forms signed by my G.P. for all the others. Early I know, but that's what happens when you give me too much time to sit around and wait to start school.

I write the "assessment for success" communications exam at Mohawk today. I've heard two different things about the results of this test: Firstly, that if you score well enough, that you can be exempt from doing any communications in the first semester and second, that no matter how well you score, that you still must do one communications course first semester. I expect it will be the latter, but I guess I'll find out for sure today and report back here.

So, if you are going to Mohawk in September, please introduce yourself. I'm a 54 year old male and will probably be the oldest person in our class :)

Chris.

I can confirm now, that one can be exempt from taking a communications course! I scored high enough on my assessment exam today (which they mark as soon as you finish) and have been exempted from communications altogether.

That's awesome!! College communications is extremely easy anyway, but obviously still takes up time. Congrats! Yes, I seems you are ahead of the game but it's better to be prepared. I have already taken a program at Mohawk and taken both communication course LL040 and LL041 (I think those are the course codes). I'm hoping I am exempt from those courses, because they wouldn't let me book my assessment. I know that we can access the list of stuff we need for the clinical portion of the program from looking around on Mocomotion , but I haven't received any other information by mail or email? Yourself?

No trish.k, the only thing I've received is a congratulations package after accepting the offer and it was mostly written confirmation of acceptance, along with a reminder to book the assessment for communications test. Apart from that, nothing yet.

LL041 is the comms most end up having to take and you've already got that, so you are good to go. My friend has just finished first semester of the Sheridan RPN program and he said comms took up a LOT of homework time, so I'm happy to be able to skip that. He suggested replacing it with one of the compulsory electives to get at least one of them out of the way early, but I think I'll just see how I go in first semester with just the nursing content. It's been many years since I was a full time student with a heavy work load.

Thanks to you Aussie_Chris, I also started the pre clinical requirements before the email went out (only a week or so). I wouldn't have thought to do it early, but I'm glad I did. I still have so much more to get done, and have probably been in to see my Dr more in the last month than I have in 3 years! It is definitely a time consuming process. Only a few months to go! I'm getting anxious and want to start already. I am also debating applying for a bursary/scholarship, because why not? I'm not sure I will qualify this semester though.

Hi trish.k,

Definitely apply for bursaries and grants. The FNAP application process for Mohawk opens early July and it's all online. Compose yourself a good cover letter explaining why you would be a good recipient, as you need to upload that during the application process. (you probably know this already) I found out because I have already submitted my application.....unfortunately, I was applying for the summer round of submissions, oops jumping the gun as usual lol. No wonder I never heard back from them.

I'm like you and can't wait to get started. It's a longer process to begin upgrading and applying, then wait to actually begin school, than it is to finish the course! Oh well, soon enough we'll be stressing about OSCE's and assignments that are due!

Chris.

Have you done the Mask Fitting yet? I'm just working on some of the quizzes now. I was going to register for CPR-HCP and Mask fit, but mask fitting is not provided right now. Have you had any luck with either yet? I just don't want to rush to do CPR, the actual mask fitting and the WHIMIS because it all has an expiry but I want to plan for it, ya know? I have a few weeks before school starts off of work so i can prepare, drop off paper work and complete all the loose ends.

I went ahead and finished everything from that pre-placement online course. I know some of it has expiry dates, but I figured I'd just get it all done. We will all have to renew those certificates at some point during the course, I guess I'll just be doing mine a bit earlier than others lol. As for the physical mask fit and cpr courses, a friend of mine that's currently in the Sheridan program did it all at the same place on the mountain, the instructor runs the school from his home and my friend said he's fantastic. His website is here:

stjos-cpr.ca/index.html (put a www in front)

I am going to book there for August, to try and get it all done in one or two visits. If you want to keep in touch and book at the same time, it would be cool to meet a fellow classmate before school starts!

Chris.

Awesome! I will keep you posted. I think I actually came across that website earlier today lol. Prices are about half the price than if you go through Mohawk. Thanks for all the info. Is is September yet? haha

Hi trish.k,

Just noticed that the fall round of awards/bursaries applications are now open on the Mohawk website.

Chris,

Thanks for letting me know! :)

Trish
