Conditional Acceptance Dilemma at MacEwan

World Canada CA Programs

Published

Hey everyone!

I recently received my conditional acceptance from Macewan Nursing for Fall 2017. I'm relieved but also my anxiety levels have shot through the roof. Currently, my GPA is sitting at a 3.38 and the competitive GPA is a 3.5. When I applied, I did not expect to receive any reply until I finished a course I am currently taking for Winter 2017. Here's where things get confusing:

I called the nursing advisors, and was transferred to a really nice lady who deals mainly with conditional acceptances, and I asked whether I needed to take this one course I am taking right now (Anthropology 101) or if I can just drop it, and wait until my conditional --> full acceptance. She checked my admission comments, and said I have a current gpa of 3.7 and I could just drop whatever I'm taking. The only thing is, that was completely wrong and my GPA is actually a 3.38. She double checked, saw the error, and contacted the person who reviewed my admission. What happened was the system miscalculated my GPA and gave me a higher one (lol). Because of this error, she said they will still honour my offer.

She recommended that I should continue taking this course, and try to boost my GPA up a little however she said that some students were able to get in with a GPA around mine, and some were dropped from conditional to waitlist.

If I have a conditional acceptance, and I do drop this course, what are the chances they drop me to a waitlist? I mean, she did say they would honour my offer. From what I understand, my conditional acceptance can be withdrawn if I drop below the competitive GPA but technically I was given one at my current GPA (3.38) so even if I drop this course, it won't go down any further. Another option is to just take this course and do really well, if I can manage to get an A, I will finish with a 3.52. The only thing is, it's $790 to take this course and I really don't want to waste that money if I can get in with my current GPA or if I screw up on the course somehow and I've never gotten an A in a course before.

I have until Friday to drop my course with refund but I haven't paid my tuition yet so I think I should be safe up to January 31 when tuition is due. My head hurts thinking about what to do and reading up on how long waitlists take makes my anxiety worse.

What should I do?

Will the anthropology course count as an elective once you are in the program? If so, take it now.

Not too sure if it does but I believe I've already taken my electives.

How many courses are you currently taking and if you are working, how many hours per week are you working?

Hello! Do you mind me asking when you applied for the fall 2017 nursing program? I wonder if it is too late to apply now

Take the course and get an A... it will haunt you forever if you don't.
