I am a VALOR student now in Las Vegas and all I can say is that the experience is a great benefit to those who receive the honor of being apart of the program. I am not sure how it works at the Palo Alto, VA but the person to contact normally is the Nurse Educator at the facility.
How did you guys hear about the program? If you have any questions feel free to leave them here or message me.
Just curious if anyone has heard about the 2012 VALOR program at VA Palo Alto. It looks like the deadline has already come and gone.Any past or present VA Palo Alto VALOR students care to offer some feedback on their experiences with: the application process / experience in program / post-VALOR program employment?
Does the VALOR program honor veteran status when considering applicants?
Have any applicants received acceptance or rejection letters yet?

I am not sure about Palo Alto, but I applied for this program in the Bay Area and they are looking to place students at the Martinez location. I was offered an interview on 4/16 for tomorrow. This is very competitve, I believe only 3 positions available and they are interviewing 20 or 21 students from at least 3 local schools. I do believe that they honor veteran status but typically the GPA is heavily weighted. I am assuming that if two students were close in qualifications and attributes that the veteran will win over the non-veteran. The student from my school who was awarded the position last year, a non-veteran, had a 4.0. The GPA was the determining factor when deciding who would be invited to the interview.
I hope this helps.

I was a VALOR student in the bay area and am here to offer my 2 cents. The VALOR program was a life-changing experience. I learned all of my IV skills through this program as well as fundamental nursing skills while gaining independence. I was able to get in to a very prestigious new graduate residency program in the bay area less than 2 months after graduating, so I think it really aids in the post-graduation job hunt.
Best of luck to all the existing and future VALOR students! :)
@bluechick112 - I am a previous VALOR as well (from Utah) and just moved in the Bay. I saw that you were hired at SHC. I have an interview with them on the 25th and am expecting an interview for the Palo Alto VA in Aug. How do you like SHC? Did you bring up your VALOR experience during the SHC panel interview? Were they pretty knowledgable about the VALOR program? I'm a relatively new member so I'm not sure if you can PM me. If not, let me know and I'll reply with my e-mail. Thanks in advance.

I'm probably way late in answering this, but hopefully it can help someone out later on. I was a VALOR last year (May 2011-2012). I applied in late March/early April, interviewed first week of May, got the job offer 3rd week of May. I was already working at the VA (as a Student Nurse Tech), so I didn't have to do any of the VetPro, fingerprinting, etc. They DO honor Vet preference (I am a SC vet - so 10 points added to my overall application).
The VALOR program is amazing! They spend tons of money and time helping you gain knowledge and skills. They put me through essentials of critical care, 12-lead EKG, ACLS, to name a few. I primarily worked at the MICU.
After school there was a job opening at the MICU - but I moved to California (husband is separating from AD and Cali is where I'm from). Now, I'm hoping to land a new grad position here in the Bay Area.
