U.S.A. California

Hey everybody,

I didn't see a thread yet for the Summer 2013 cohort for USF Masters Clinical Nurse Leader Program so I decided to make one. The application deadline is coming up and figured it would be great to meet fellow applicants and stress out together haha

Did anyone get a call today?

Wow briglad congrats! I'm very proud of you!

What's your background and history? Sorry just want to find out how they choose their candidates! Thank you for your time!!

@ DAS225 - That's a little bit of a bummer! Oh well. Thanks for the info though! Anything else you can share about what we can expect during our first couple weeks of the semester? Or maybe things you'd recommend we purchase for school?

@ briglad - Congrats on your acceptance! I'll be seeing in Frisco! :)

Hi All,

Congrats to those who have been accepted so far!

I spoke with a recent grad a few weeks ago. She said that USF calls all accepted students by working its way down the list of who they want 'most.' (So you early called people should feel proud!) As some of the accepted students inevitably choose another school, USF then keeps going down the list. So it has nothing to do with when you sent in your app or what letter your last name starts with. The former student said they will do this throughout the month of April. Once the cohort is full with students who have accepted the acceptance (if you know what I mean) ... they send out the rejection letters.

This means that those of us, like me, who have not yet gotten a call should keep our fingers crossed until the end of the month. It also means: call good , letter bad .

I definitely get the impression that USF stresses service and a desire to help vulnerable populations. Unfortunately, I didn't know to stress this in my application, even though it is very important to me as well. Sigh.

Good luck to all of us still waiting.

Thank you so much scwolf for the insight! It has lessened my stress a bit. I think you and I both interviewed at UCSF this past application period. I obviously didn't make the final cut but USF is better suited for me anyway :) now I just hope I get in!

Good luck to all!

Congrats to all of you who got in!! For those of you who have been accepted, would you guys mind giving a background of yourselves just so the rest of can get an idea of the people USF is accepting. Things like GPA, work experience, degrees, or anything else that you think made you stand out. I have a hunch I do not have enough clinical experience for this type of program so I'm really interested to see if that may be true.

Thank you to those of you who feel comfortable sharing!

For those of you still waiting to hear back, hang in there and good luck! =]

@aggiepack177 Here's my info....I went to U.C. Irvine: B.A. Sociology (GPA-3.1) & M.A. Teaching (4.0), Prerequisite courses GPA-3.4. Though my undergad GPA and pre-req GPA are not the best compared to others, I did LOTS of extracurricular stuff: served on board 2 years for my community service-based sorority, 2 years for a cultural club on campus with 200+ members, interned for a women's organization fighting against human trafficking, & interned for a program where I taught high school students. After finishing school at UCI, I also became a Certified Nursing Assistant. First I worked in a nursing home, then I became a floater at a hospital.

I don't know how much it weighs in the decision-making, but I became close to both of my recommenders while working with them so they know me reeeally well--from my work ethic to exactly why I chose to pursue nursing.

I was kind of scared to share this at first:unsure:, but I hope this helps gives some hope to those who are like me and did not have a stellar undergrad GPA. ;) Good luck to everyone still waiting...I really do wish you the best and even though you are all strangers (lol), I am praying for you to hear good news!

@ lolibear - I'm an Alumni from UC Irvine too! :)

@ Aggiepack177 - Here are my stats: B.A. in Psychology (Cognitive Sciences, not psych & social beahavior) from UCI. Undergrad GPA 3.3 and pre-requisite GPA 3.5 (so nothing spectacular there). I was a Research Assistant on a pediatric study looking at feeling states and heart rates, and I ran participants through fitness tests and EEG's and collected vitals before testing. For healthcare experience, I interned at Hoag Hospital here in O.C. for about two and half years. They allow interns hands-on time with patients, so I did my best to log as many hours as possible (about 500). I was was a department coordinator within the internship and managed interns rotating through Gynecology & Urology and also helped with recruitment and training. Since I was a transfer student and a first generation college student, I spent a lot of time volunteering and speaking with high school students from low-income areas. At UCI I also worked as a transfer student peer mentor for a summer.

I believe the LOR's played a huge role in my outcome. One of them was a physician who I have know for many years. I have shadowed her with patients, and also currently work in her practice. I guess you could say she mentored me along the way, so she knew how I came to decide on nursing and how much I was determined to break into healthcare. The other was a professor from the JC I transferred from. I had a rough go at college when I first started back in '06, so I think her letter definitely helped attest to my growth as a student and readiness for graduate study. I also think I wrote a very strong SOP.

Anyways I hope this helps a little, I was hesitant to share my stats at first because it feels a little personal, and also because it seems like everyone is so qualified and motivated. I hope those still waiting receive good news fast! It would be so great to meet you guys/gals next month!! :)

Here are my stats, for those who are interested:

3.63 undergrad GPA

4.0 prereq GPA (all completed before applying)

I have several years of volunteering in community clinics. I also gained entry to two highly competitive ABSNs, and it clearly wasn't due to my GPA. I think that my long-standing and varied volunteer experiences set me apart, as did my personal statement. My story of how I first thought I could be a healthcare provider was pretty compelling, so I ran with it and tried to balance the storytelling aspect with concrete examples of how my diversity of experiences (professional and volunteer) have prepared me for nursing. I sent my statement to many people (especially nurses) for review and feedback.

My letters were both from people who knew me very well and could speak to both my academic and clinical competence.

Good luck to all waiting to hear!

@Madrid. Navarro and lolibear

Thank you for sharing. You are both amazing and deserve your acceptance and then some :) It will be an honor to be in the same cohort if I make it! Thank you again for sharing such personal info.

I just called the USF nursing admissions office today and she said the notification date for this has changed yet again. She said it was supposed to be on the 22nd, but has now been moved to the last week of April. I guess we'll have to keep our fingers crossed even longer!

Ugh, the waiting is so tough! Do you think they'll go ahead and send out rejection letters to us if they know, for sure, that they don't want us, or will everyone have to wait until the end of April to hear anything? I do want to get in, but it'd be a relief to just know if I've been rejected. . . By the way, everyone who HAS been accepted sounds truly amazing & I can see why you were phoned. I'd phone you.

I wonder how those of us who aren't nurses yet can get more direct work experience with patients? I volunteer in Nursing Case Management at a free clinic, but I'd LOVE to be given more direct responsibility and to learn more about direct clinical patient care.

For those of you who were accepted and wondering, I just received the acceptance letter by mail today. I live in the city, so those of you that live in Southern California or out of state, you should be receiving yours soon. Classes start on Tuesday, May 21st!!!! Good luck to all of you and looking forward to meeting the rest of Cohort 16!!
