Taking deficient subjects in another state like Texas?

U.S.A. California

Hi. I am currently an RN in Texas. I read somewhere on Facebook, particularly in a group specific for California RN applicants, that you can take your deficient subjects in another state. Can anyone confirm this? I live in the Houston area and it would be great if I can take my deficiency subjects here instead of going back to CA. thanks!

Specializes in ICU.

I don't see why you couldn't take your deficient courses in TX since some people endorse their out of state licenses without ever being in CA before or ever going to school there.

I did an accelerated BSN program in OK and had a classmate who moved to CA immediately upon graduation and was approved by the CA BRN to take the NCLEX for CA licensure, so I don't think it matters which state you complete your prereqs in.

Yes, I can confirm this because I did it. First you need to ask the school if they are willing to allow foreign educated nurses to take certain classes from their nursing program. Then you need to have the school send to the BRN, the course syllabi along with a letter from the director saying that they are allowing you to take those classes with them and when you will be taking them. You should also communicate with your CA BRN evaluator that you plan on doing this.

If you'd like to know, I took medsurg & OB in South Texas College down here in McAllen, TX.
