Sac State and CSU Stanislaus launch ABSN in Stockton

U.S.A. California

Just wanted to get the word out there that Sacramento State and CSU Stanislaus are launching an accelerated second bachelor's program for nursing. The first class is supposed to start August 2011 and the program is 15 months long. Classes are supposed to be held in Stockton. The downside is that the cost is $35K. You can register your interest on the CSU Stanislaus extended learning website.

also, i think another limitation is you cannot hold a degree higher than what you are trying to study for. for example, those with bachelor degrees cannot get financial aid for an associate degree program. in my case, trying to get an ADN would prove more financially difficult than trying to get a BSN because loans are not available to me (i would need to rely on savings and family to pay for everything).

This is not true for all schools so you may want to contact specific schools to find out how this works. I have been accepted to a community college for the ADN program, and was first denied loans because I have a BS degree, but upon appeal was approved to take out loans to cover my living expenses. It may a lengthier process, but it can be done.

Nice to know! Even though I can get Federal loans for a second BSN, I don't want to pay that much. I all ready owe on my first degree and it is so not worth it. I figured a low rate (well, low for these times) personal loan was my best option for my local ADN program. My plan was then an ADN to MSN while working p/t. Any help at the ADN level in the form of financial aid would be welcome. Since I'm sure they won't give out too much, it won't be a hardship to pay back. I beleive there is also money available for those willing to work in an underserved hospital. I'm hoping that will help with some of the costs.

I found out about the ABSN program a few months ago. Too late for this first round. I just finished Physio. in the summer, so it wouldn't have mattered anyway. It sounds terrific! I did a distance learning program at CSUS Stockton Center in collaboration with another state college for my bachelors. The Stockton Center is a super small school with free parking. It's very low stress. The huge downside is the super high cost. It completely rules it out for me. The CSU Stan ABSN program coordinator at the time told me they basically took the first applications that were complete with all criteria met. That's amazing with the competitive nature of so many programs. He wasn't so sure it would be that easy the next round.

I would love to hear from anyone who is in the program once it starts. I think I'll apply just in case, but likely will be going the ASN route.
