National University San Diego- October 2012 Cohort

U.S.A. California

As today was TEAS/essay day, I think it safe to say cohort 32 is pretty well established. So now that the last hoop has been jumped through, now its just a waiting game!

How does everyone else feel about their points? I talked to a few people today during the essay, and was hearing some pretty low scores being accepted. I was told a TEAS score above 70 was acceptable (shocking!!), and that the average cut off for the last cohort was between 84-85 points.

I'm looking at being between 87-91 points (depending on my essay, which i realistically expect a 4/5 on). I scored 87 on my TEAS, have all A's with a B+ in BioMedStats, and didn't repeat classes. The B+ drives me crazy, but from what Im seeing many people are applying with multiple B's and get accepted.

For people reading this that havent applied for their cohort yet, you dont need to take the TEAS at national!! Do NOT wait till that day to take it for your first any only time, thats insane! You can take it every day at SDSU, over and over again, until you get a good score. I am astonished by ppl who are only taking it once at National.

So, at the end of next month we'll find out if we are accepted or denied. Hows everyone else feelng?

Hi Makayla,

I'm currently trying to apply for National's nursing program this coming October.

I have took the TEAS 3 times at SDSU, for their nursing program already (but got denied) . I don't want to just bank on just ONE chance at the TEAS with National.

Do you think I could still take the TEAS again at SDSU over and over again until I'm satisfied with a high score, even if i have already took it 3 times at SDSU before?

Thanks so much for you help!

I know you were asking Makayla....I took the TEAS at SDSU 2 times and once at NU. I ended up turning in my score to NU from SDSU b/c I did better on the one from SDSU. I thought the TEAS at NU was easier, but really, they are all equally difficult. I was also taking 2 classes and studying for the TEAS this last go around, so I am sure that is why I did not do as well on the score. Do you know why you did not get in? What score did you get on the TEAS? It is so scary how competitive it is :banghead::nurse:

About the TEAS- if you are applying to programs outside National as well then you do need to be careful about how many times you take it. Some programs, like the CSU's, only let you take it 2 or three times. National however has no cap on your attempts. You can take the TEAS every day until you get an acceptable score. National of course doesnt tell you that you can take it at SDSU everyday because they want your money (surprise!).

So, its the 3rd week in July. We should be getting our acceptance or denial any day now right? Has anyone heard anything?

Also, how do we find out our score on the essay?

Not a peep yet! Awaiting with anticipation :D

I believe you can find out your scores after you have recieved an acceptance letter. :nurse::heartbeat

I Spoke to ------------ a few days ago. She said that we could expect emails in 'the beginning of August'. I believe this will tell us our essay scores as well as our admittance.

This waiting is really stressing me out, I am hoping to find out by this friday, August 3rd.

Hi everyone, I applied for the SD January cohort. I just have a question about nationals BSN program that i'm hoping someone could answer. I feel like the nursing forum gave no info on the actual program, just how to get in. Which i wasn't too fond of. But i heard that NU's program doesn't include a preceptorship. Is this true? If so, that could be a huge deal-breaker for their program. A preceptorship is where you get your "in" for jobs near the end of your program, and it's pretty much the only thing a new grad has going for them when looking for jobs. I know this first hand, i work on a med-surg unit at a hospital and my boss told me that it would be extra hard to find a job without a preceptorship on my resume. So, if anyone knows for sure, let me know!

Thanks. and good luck to everyone getting in to the october cohort!! :)

Mykllr- Friday would be amazing, but I strongly doubt it. I was told they had a lot of applicants, and that they were hoping for early August. I'm expecting more around the 15th if not later.

Jenna- Most programs try to offer a preceptorship, but it's never guaranteed. You say you already work in a hospital, I wouldn't be worried if I were you. If its between you and someone else fresh out of school, they would pick you. Why wouldn't your current hospital hire you once you obtain your BSN?

Makayla, I would have a foot in the door at my hospital, but i'm not planning on working during the program, so 3 years later they may have new employees trying to get an RN position that have had a preceptorship. New grads have enough difficulty finding a job as it is, my hospital only accepts around 6 new grads a year.

That is a difficult situation. I haven't asked about a preceptorship with National, but I would be surprised if none were offered. You said you applied in Jan, have you started yet? Did they explicitly state there were none?

If you don't plan on working at all during the program, it will definately be very hard for you. I have my CNA, and I plan on working 3-4 days a month to keep myself in the system. Once you have completed so much of the program, many hospitals will hire you for CNA positions.

I applied, but the program doesnt start until january 2013. I'll find out around october if i get accepted. I'm also waiting to hear from a couple other programs. I've actually been working as a CNA for 5 years. My current job is two 12 hour shifts a week, which after my shift i am completely exhausted and am not up to studying, so i think even that would be too much for me during the program. I've thought about working for a registry, where i can work as little or as much as my school schedule allows, but even then you aren't an employee of a hospital. I suppose it would help though, you still get to know people by hopping around to different hospitals.

You are already ahead by having 5 years of experience. The number one requirement of all these jobs is a years experience. I would definately stay in some sort of position through school though, unless you can confirm the preceptorship. I'm think about doing lift team, sitter, or continuing my CNA position. Just something to keep me seen in the hospitals.

I called ***** last Friday and she said the results should be out by the end of this week. Hope that calms some nerves.
