How to apply for CA Nursing from RN - Nepal?

Hello All,

I am Registered Nurse (diploma level) from Nepal. I am studying Bachelor in Nursing Science (currently in 4th year of 4 years program). Besides, I have more than 2 years of clinical experience after my diploma. If I have to apply for MSN in California what steps do I need to take? What should be the initial step? Most people in this forum talked about CGFNS in New York but I did not get it properly. Also, I went to rn.ca.gov but did not get the right information.

Sounds like you want to go to school in California for a Master's degree? Your first step is to find the school with the program you are interested in attending and see if your qualifications can get you in. From there, the school will direct you on how to file for an F1 Visa which also has a set of requirements you must fulfill. The school will likely require you to be a Registered Nurse in California and that's when you need to go to the BRN website to download and file an application for licensure by examination.

Most probably when I come to California my BSN will be completed.

So, do you know how California evaluates the courses that I have studies in Nepal (or any other foreign countries)?

You will have to provide your transcript from the school in Nepal to the California Board of Nursing for review. If the documents aren't in English, you will need to have official translations done.

California requires that you have a certain number of hours of theory and clinical experience in various areas...and these requirements apply to both US and International programs. If your nursing program does not meet these requirements, you can't get licensed in California, either initially or via endorsement from another state.

California is very strict about its educational requirements, much to the dismay of many international (and some domestic) graduates. I would contact the Board for more information, and do it before you lay out any money for a graduate degree.

Thank you very much Meriwhen. The information you have provided is very helpful. I am sure others who are in same condition might get an idea too. Let's see what I can do. I tried contacting the Board of Nursing, California by phone but no luck. May be I will send them an email.

Anytime I've had to contact the California Board, I've had the best luck with e-mail.
