Hello everyone!

I was wondering if anyone knows the application deadline for Charles R. Drew Nursing School for Fall semester? I really want to apply but I haven't taken my GRE. Also, if anyone can let me know about their experience at the school I would be very grateful. I know there are prereqs to get in but I did not see any science courses that are required. Any information would be great. Thank you!

Hey- yes their website is confusing because the application page doesn't link to the pre-reqs. It is there.. but somewhere hidden haha. But here they are for the ELM program

Entry Level Track:

  • Anatomy with Lab (within 7 years of application date)
  • Physiology with Lab (within 7 years of application date)
  • Microbiology with Lab (within 7 years of application date)
  • English Composition
  • Sociology
  • Speech
  • Psychology
  • Nutrition
  • Statistics

Unfortunately the deadline has already passed for fall 2015. It is today 12/1/14. :( But there will be a spring application mid next year.

Current student here!

So far, they've had "rolling admissions" so take your GRE and apply as soon as you're ready. I had one prereq in progress when I applied and I was still accepted. Once you're accepted, if they give you a specific date/deadline to do something, DO IT AT THAT DATE AND TIME! Don't go on vacation, don't have surgery, don't get a flat tire. Otherwise, someone else will take your spot and you'll be deferred to start the following semester.

Here's my impression/experience:

Things can be a bit disorganized or scheduled without much prior warning. I HIGHLY advise anyone that wants to attend this program to not have any other commitments (a job). Your experience here will be much greater if you are 100% flexible and can go along with things as they arise. Otherwise, you'll spend too much energy trying to get someone to change something for you, which more than likely will not happen.

If you ever need to contact them, do not waste your time calling. Almost no one answers their phone there and they certainly do not return voicemail messages. Email is a good alternative. Showing up during business hours is even better. I'd say 10am M-Th is your best bet.

The attitude of the entire campus is inviting. It's a very small private school, so you don't really feel lost in a crowd, as it may be with the larger, public schools.

The classes are not unmanageable but they do require a lot of TIME and effort. You have to put the time in to be successful. There are no shortcuts.

Wow that's great! Yeah during the application process, it seemed very disorganized. I tried calling AND emailing with questions but got no response for a week. I finally got an email from my counselor, but of course she goes on vacation right after she sends the email until when the application was due! But I went in person, and they took care of me RIGHT AWAY. I just feel like they are short-staffed.

Anyways, how is learning there? Is the curriculum student-centered and the professors available to help?

I'm a first semester student so my experience only reflects the classes and professors thus far. With that being said, this seems like a self-taught kind of program. I feel like the curriculum is mainly geared toward NCLEX success.

The professors lecture, but you absolutely have to read the text to absorb the info. Skills lab is more of a luck of the draw- you'll either be placed in a group with a really good instructor or you'll end up in a group with a crappy one. The really good ones demonstrate things for you and coach you so that you learn properly. The crappy ones leave you to figure things out for yourself. Most of the professors do make themselves available for you during their office hours, and we have several tutors who are great resources.

The SON is not perfect but fortunately, things are slowly improving.

St. Francis medical center is one site but the hospital is going through a buyout so idk if they'll still go there.

Other clinical sites include Cedars-Sinai, Hollywood Presbyterian, and East LA medical center
