Anyone working at the VA in Los Angeles?

I recently accepted a job with the VA in Los Angeles and wanted to get the lowdown. It sounds like an amazing facility but I've been hearing lots of negatives that are making me a bit nervous.

I'm a veteran so this has been my dream for a long time, however, I'm turning down a great NP school and quitting my current job to go into this area. Since I'm still a new nurse I wanted to make sure I wasn't making a huge mistake.

How is scheduling?

Floating between ER/ICU?

Training?

Taking time off?

Pay? I was offered a VERY low wage but I'm told that once it's formally reviewed in the next 6 or so months it'll go up - has anyone experienced this?

Relationships between staff (nurse and physician etc)?

I suppose I'll learn soon enough I just wanted to get some info before starting so I'm not expecting the worst or completely surprised by something I should have known!

I was wondering how easy or hard is it to get hired at the VA. I am a veteran 40% disabled but just graduating this Friday. I have a job here in surgery. I was wondering if I can start applying at 6 months or do I have to wait the whole year? Also how is the fresno area at hiring nurses, especially new graduates if you know about that area...thank you
