GCU or CEP

U.S.A. Arizona

Hello,

I recently started researching nursing programs and am hoping to make the career change into nursing as soon as possible. A little background on me- I have two previous bachelor degrees in Molecular/Cellular Biology as well as Psychology. Because of the past degrees, I have some pre reqs already completed (chemistry, statistics, math, english, intro to psych). I also completed the microbiology lecture but never took the lab. However, when I spoke to GCU over the phone, they suggested that I would need to retake it since I earned a C in the lecture. So right now, it looks like I am looking at taking A&P 1 and 2, human pathophysio, socio and micro. GCU also requires a developmental psych class, of which, I never took, but I do hold a psychology degree and they are unsure if I could replace that class with another that I took.

I was discouraged when talking to GCU because they told me that since I would be transferring my classes to them, they expect a GPA above a 3.8. Right now I think I have a GPA of 3.4 in the pre reqs I completed, but I still have quite a few more classes to complete.

I started looking at the CEP program and from my understanding I think I only need to complete A&P 1 to get in the nursing pool, and from then continue to take classes to meet the requirements of the designated CEP school I would like. I was wondering how competitive this program is? For instance, if one was to meet all the pre reqs with the GPA requirement, would you more than likely get in?

Also, I saw there was an ADN to MSN program with GCU CEP, and it is designed for people with a bachelors degree in another field. Is anyone looking into this progrm?? From my understanding it is new and spring 2015 will be the first cohort. This program sounds the best to me, as it would give me the opportunity to earn a higher degree than i already have.

I would probably go for the MSN if I were in your position. Why not get your masters?! Otherwise, I'd say a CEP thru maricopa just because it is so much cheaper than gcu for the bsn.

Specializes in NICU.

I would go for your BSN first. When you get your masters you will have no hands on experience and so much school that will make it harder to find a job. I am going to GCU currently so maybe my opinion won't count but, i have 2 friends that got their MSN through the UofA and 1 has found a job in a small town in Texas and the other has not been able to find a job yet. But don't stop at your BSN keep going :-) Just my 2cents! lol
