ASU Summer of 2011 applicants!

U.S.A. Arizona

Published

hello all you asu nursing hopefuls,

well, i decided to start this thread to get all of the arizona state bsn majors that are applying for the 16-month summer program starting in may of 2011 together. i went to the advancement workshop on 11/12/2010 and saw so many people there. i can't even imagine how many people will be applying. with only 100 seats open, it's going to be tough, although that's probably an understatement. the advancement scores for summer cycles have been lower than the traditional 24-month program in the past, but with all the changes that asu decided to make :uhoh3:, i think things will be different this time around. i don't think my chances are very good compared to other applicants. i have a 3.81 gpa... realistically, i'll probably have to get like a 92% on the teas to be competitive against students that have a 4.0, which seems like most do. i don't think that's possible...but i gotta stay optimistic. with replacement course for sciences being virtually impossible to take (seeing how you need so many pre-reqs for them which the nursing program doesn't require), i'm starting to worry:crying2: .however, all i can do is study my butt of for the teas and see what happens.

anyhoo..... feel free to share comments and stories, ask questions, and connect with other students that are applying for the summer 2011 program. this is just a way for us to get through the long wait until april arrives and to provide encouragement for each other. :heartbeat

How competitive has ASU become? I've been going back and forth between ASU and GCU! For ASU, I have a select GPA of 4.0 but havent taken my TEAS test yet! I completed my pre-reqs at a community college. But anyways, I'm just curious if anyone here knows what my chances are of getting into ASUs nursing program! :/ Thank you!

Hey talenea!

In regards to your question, ASU has become quite competitive. With a GPA of a 4.0, you have a pretty good shot as long as you do decently on the TEAS. A score in the high 70s or low 80s may be cutting it close, but its hard to say with the additional number of spots they have for the Summer 2011 program. If you score in the mid to high 80s, I'd say you'd probably get in without a problem.

I'm not sure if you're aware of the changes to the Upper Division Advancement application ASU is making. It goes into effect for the Fall 2011 semester, which is why they opened up so many spots for the Summer program, to accommodate students the changes may seriously affect. Basically, your advancement score will be calculated a little differently... It will be worth 6 points of your advancement score instead of 4. They added a multiplier to your GPA based on the number of credits taken at ASU versus the number of credits taken at other colleges. Students who have completed all 17 of their prereqs at ASU have a multiplier of 1.5, while students who have taken all 17 of their classes at another institution will have a multiplier of 1. (The multiply decreases as the number of classes taken at ASU decreases). So basically a student with a 4.0 who has taken all of their classes at ASU will receive 6 points to wards their advancement score. While a student that also has a 4.0 but took all of their prereqs somewhere other than ASU will only receive 4 points towards their advancement score. In your case, this will severely decrease your chances of getting into the program. Another change they have made is in regards to replacement classes. Currently, you're allowed to replace as many classes as you'd like to improve a B to an A. With this new change, you are only allowed to replace 2 grades.

So if you'd like to get into ASU's program, you should definitely apply for the summer program as that would be your best shot, especially if you do well on the TEAS. Although its not impossible for you to get into the program in fall, it will just be a whole lot harder.

If you didn't already know all that, I hope that helps you in making your decision! Both ASU and GCU have excellent nursing programs, so either program is a good choice!

Thanks for that lovely breakdown! :)

I came in thinking grammar was going to be the -easiest- section for me, but no way! There are so many rules that we just don't follow anymore (like a couple being referred to as it! the heckkk lol). It is just science that worries me now. I understand the general concepts of most things - some more thoroughly than others. I felt like the practice tests in the study manual were a lot more general compared to the first online practice test. So now I feel like I need to know the ins and outs of everything I am not totally familiar with. Oh well, I'd rather be overly prepared than not at all!

Anyways, I am sure you will get in to Mayo if that is what you ultimately choose. I am still indecisive about it. I live in Chandler so Mayo is far from me. I might just pick it as my first and see if I get in the top 20 or not.

I have a 4.0 GPA. I took 202 and micro over the summer back to back - so I am somewhat surprised I managed to pull it all off. I took Patho last semester (you are going to love it if you have robichaud!), and I am now done with my classes. Yay!

I have a 4.0 GPA as well, so with the TEAS score it gives me an advancement score of 5.86. Today's been a pretty good day for me! I live on the Chandler/Tempe border and Mayo is quite the drive, especially if you happen to get stuck in rush hour. But if I get into the Mayo program, I'm planning on getting an apartment a little closer to Mayo. I was thinking south Scottsdale because north Scottsdale's pretty expensive (I used to live about 5 min away from Mayo actually lol). But it really just depends on how things work out.

My main reasoning for wanting to go to Mayo is because I'd like to go to medical school after working as a nurse for a year. And if I could get a job at Mayo after graduating, that'd be awesome. With the summer program being accelarated, I'll graduate in 3 years instead of 4, so it works out really well! Because Mayo does bring that notoriety, I feel like it would look really good on a med school applications and I could probably get some very good recommendations.

My best friend is currently at UofA and has given up trying to get into the nursing program there and is planning on moving back here and going to GCU. It's so ridiculously competitive trying to get into these programs. Seriously, it seems harder to get into nursing school than it is medical school! lol

As for the grammar thing, "the couple" thing really threw me off too! I have the most difficult time figuring out if a subject is plural or singular when they play around with words like that. Sooo confusing. And completely irrevelevant to nursing! It's really not going to matter in a healthcare setting whether or not you say, "the couple is" versus "the couple are". Just seems so silly.

The book practice tests are for sure WAY easier than the real thing. The online practice tests are about the same difficulty as the real test. So I'd definitely base my progress off of those versus the book practice tests.

Study as much as you can for a test like this... its hard because its just a weird thing to study for. But when it comes time to take the real deal, you know what you know! So there's nothing to stress about once you walk in to take the test! I have a feeling the cutoff score will be a lot lower than usual because of the amount of spaces available and the fact that a lot of people don't want to be in the summer program for a bunch of different reasons. Let's hope that's true! :)

Yeah, you should definitely do Mayo then! I was thinking about getting an apartment out there if I get in as well. We will see. I had to drive out to N Scottsdale last semester every week because I was interning at a hospice there. I hated the drive b/c it was at 8am in the morning while everyone was heading to work!

I hope I will have an excellent day on the 28th like you did today!! My friend took his test today and did really well. I am not sure if he is applying to mayo though. I heard the average so far was like a 68...I am not sure what that means in regards to the cut off score being higher/lower than usual. I think I am scared there will be A LOT of applicants b/c it is sort of the last call for anyone who has CC classes.

Eeee, I am excited though :)

Yeah, there might be more applicants than usual for summer, but with 100 spots... I don't know. A lot of people don't like the idea of not having summer's off. Others don't want to pay summer tuition because its more expensive and harder to get financial aid. It just depends I guess. If I can get my BSN faster, I don't see why not!

And I'm sure the 28th will be a good day for you to! When I hit the "see score" button, I swear my heart literally stopped. I was totally expect a score in the low 80s, I really didn't think I had done as well as I actually did. It was such a relief to see it was in the 90s. Just stay positive and study/practice as much as you can! I didn't start studying until this last Monday... haha I'm a horrible procrastinator, but it gets the job done. But definitely don't wait till then to start! Start studying now and I'm sure you'll do amazing. If you pulled off Micro and A&P crammed into one summer, you can get an amazing score on this silly test.

You'll have to keep me posted on how the studying goes and what you end up getting on the TEAS! I'm really anxious to see how test scores turn out this semester. I've heard of lots of mid-80s scores so far! And just about everyone has a 4.0....

And oh yeah, I do have robichaud for patho this semester!

Man.... I am really worried... everyone seems to have a 4.0 here, where I am sweating bullets trying to figure out how to get anything above a 90% on my TEAS so that I can be somewhat competitive. I guess the only thing to hold onto at this point is the hope that not that many people apply... preferably under 100 ha!!!! I'm so worried! My stomach has been in knots since the advancement workshop! :uhoh21:

It's possible! Just study as best you can and answer as many practice questions as possible! That's what helped me...

When do you take the TEAS? And you've probably mentioned this in a previous post but what's your select GPA?

Hi I was just wondering, is the bsn program accelerated seeing as how its only 16 months? Also are you from AZ or another state?

ASU has both accelerated and traditional programs. For the summer start date, only the accelerated program is offered. The entire degree itself consists of 2 years (or 4 semesters) of prereqs followed by the upper division courses which can be done in either 16 months or 24 months. And yes, ASU is Arizona State University. So most people who are applying to the program either go to ASU or another college nearby.

I know it's possible, but it's just so scary and kinda frustrating that we have to know all this stuff that we'll never probably use again. I'm just a chronic worrier, that's all lol  But anyhoo.....I have a 3.81 select GPA... so that's pretty much bottom of the barrel at ASU. It's because I have two B's in my sciences, so to retake those, it wouldn't even be worth it because I would need so many random pre-reqs specific to the replacement courses that our regular major map doesn't require. So, I'm stuck with my 3.81

Even though GPA counts for 2/3 of the advancement score, what you get on the TEAS also makes a huge difference. A 10% difference in scores on the TEAS is a .2 difference in your overall advancement score. So if you get a 90% and someone with a 4.0 gets an 80%, you'll basically have the same advancement score.

I believe in you! :) You can do it! With 100 spots for summer, I'm thinking if you at least score in the very high 80s, you'll make it in. There's a lot of people who just don't want to pay the summer tuition rates and like to have summer's off...

Keep me posted on how the studying is coming! Let me know how the TEAS go for you. I'm sure you'll do great. I'm a chronic worrier just like you. I stress over everything and always feel unprepared (seriously.. I was so nervous for the TEAS, I puked before going to take the test! haha) but in the end, I always end up doing WAY better than I expected. The toughest section on the test is science, by far, because it covers such a broad range of topics. When you take the test, try not to second guess yourself... you're first instinct is usually right! Good luck!

Are you taking classes this semester?

Hey, All. I am also applying to the summer 2011 cycle. And just like some of you I am so hoping that not that many people apply. lol Anyways, I have a question and hopefully someone can answer it. How is anyone going about paying over 8,000 dollars for summer tuition? I get through school loans and grant money. And I have maxed it out for this year. Does anyone know of anything scholarships or something that could help pay for a summer semester?

Thanks for any help.
