Hello all! I'm a 21 year old male looking to go into the nursing profession, and hopefully this summer or fall I will be accepted into a program. I'm looking into Lawson states rn/lpn, Wallace rn/lpn, bevill rn, gasden state rn, jeffstate rn ( and lpn if they offer it, because they're currently in the deciding stages on seeing if they will discontinue it) and West Alabama and program. My question is in two parts. Number 1- is nursing really a good field for a male to get into? Are employers "jumping" for male candidates like everyone is saying? What's Secondly- which school is better as far as nursing schools go? Because I've been reading that there isn't really a nursing "shortage anymore. Is the job outlook for a male nurse better than one for a female? Can anyone confirm this? I've heard pretty good things about all of them- but I've heard Jeff state is the best and Wallace comes into a very close second! Help!

Almost everyone will be bias toward the school they attended, so that will not help you out much.

I will give you some advice though. I would not consider an LPN program. The pay is not good, and there are fewer places that will hire an LPN. Nursing homes and Dr's offices are about the only places left that hire LPN's. Very few hospitals do. Actually some hospitals are not replacing the LPN's they have when they leave.

I am so glad you responded! I actually got into Jeff states rn program Goethe summer. I saw a earlier post u made about the lpn thing and decided to follow your advice! I'm just nervous about straying in the summer! Any advice on getting ready for the program? Or should I just wait to see if I get into bevill in the fall and go that route if I get in?

By far the easiest semester of nursing school is the first semester.

Bevill does Med-Surg and Maternal/Child Birth as mini terms the second semester. We lost approx. 1/4 of the class due to Med-Surg being so fast paced.

I would encourage you to stick with Jeff St. They have a good program and good teachers, from what I hear.

Thank you so much! I really do appreciate your insight! I guess it's just the nerves getting to me about starting in the summer! Is there any type of books/sites you could recommend that would help me get adjusted? I'm retaking my 202 starting march 6 a's a mini term and I'm going to be auditing my micro teachers class when she starts in the pharmacology section and I've just completed a cna class. So I feel a's if I'm kinda prepared a's much a's one could be.. Any additional suggestions?

The only advice I can offer you is be prepared to put in the hours. Nursing school is not really hard, it is just VERY time consuming. In class you will be presented with the information, it is up to you to learn it.

Also, nursing tests are unlike any other tests you have taken. In acedemic classes your tests will have 1 right answer and 3 wrong answers. On nursing tests you will have 1 wrong answer and 3 right answer.... it is up to you to decide which is the most correct answer for the situation. Sometimes the most correct answer is totally subjective. Don't forget a 74 on a nursing test is failing.

On the entire test a 74 is failing??!! I thought it was just the course grade that had to be higher than 74!

I'm 2nd semester in night/weekend program and yes below a 74 on a test is failing, not just overall grade.

Omg! So since you go to Jeff state, which class was hardest to you? I'm taking fundamentals, pharm, and health ass. First semester... Would it be any suggestion you would offer? Also can you switch to the night and weekend program instead of staying in the day program? And one more question... On the background check, will a arrest keep you out of the program... Even if you haven't been charged with anything?

First semester we took health ass. and pharm and to me pharm was pretty difficult...health assessment wasn't so bad. We are taking fundamentals this semester and so far the lecture material is pretty intense, validations are easy. My suggestion would be just dont stress and worry right now u will have plenty of time for that...however u can start going over dosage calc and conversions, make a good study schedule and stick to it but trust me all of your questions they will answer at orientation -:). I'm not real sure about how the switching programs work but I do think under certain circumstances they allow it. As far as the background check I would definitely speak with Bonnie Glass but honestly I don't think being arrested is an issue to keep u out of the program a girl in my class had some arrests not sure what they were for but she is still in the class.

That was my biggest concern- the arrest. I haven't been charged with anything and the whole thing is really a misunderstanding for the most part. Worst case scenario, I will be charged "youthful offender" since it happened when I was like 19. I'm praying the case gets dismissed though. So on the background check it just shows misdemeanors and felonies... Not arrest? I mean if it does show up... I've only been arrested one time... And like I said it's being continued.. Btw you saying your classmate had a couple of arrest did put me at ease a little!

hospitals want males nurses. i got lots of job offers before i even graduated.
