Hi, I am a RN with associate degree in nursing. Also, I am an F-1 visa international student.

I am getting BSN degree next spring. I heard that a RN with specialty is only qualified to get a sponsor for H1b1 visa? Is it true? then, Phlebotomist is one of those kinds?

If so, I would get some classes to get phlebotomy licensure before I graduate from my BSN school.

What kind of specialties would help to get a sponsor for H1B1 visa for international student RNs? I plan to go NP school after I finish my OPT, NP is one of those kinds?

Please please answer me. 'THank you.

Specializes in Critical Care, Education.

Phlebotomy is a non-nursing certification - it is not a nursing specialty. I am not knowledgeable in this area, but I would imagine that you would have to have some actual work experience to be establish qualifications as a nurse specialist.

When people talk about specialty nursing they are talking on elements like Theatre/OR, ICU/ITU,

H1b for nurses can be difficult to get as most of the visas go to other professions like IT, currently they also go on the day they are released. In the current situation when many US nurses are looking for work then for a hospital to petition you for H1b you need to outshine others, offer something extra to the table that gets you noticed and as a new grad that can be difficult. I am not saying you can not get a H1b visa just that it will be difficult as not many hospitals will pay the $$$$$ it costs and they have to pay the costs not you. If you maintain your F1 whilst doing your NP then you can get OPT again and then look for employers as a NP you may slip into EB2 or EB1 which for most has a quicker immigration queue than EB3 and better for you if that is your eventual plan after H1b
