Depends on which country where you trained. You must have credentials that allow you to be called a "professtional" nurse or 1st level nurse in your country to be called an RN. Most programs overseas are now three or four years. In the US, we have three different programs that all lead to being able to sit for the NCLEX-RN exam...........Diploma program which is hospital based and either 2 or 3 years, the ADN which is a two year associate from a community college, and the four year BSN.

In Thailand, the two year programs are equivalent of an LPN in the US, their Diploma is equivalent to our RN program...........just different titles but also dependson what was taught in the curriculum.....

Hope that this helps...............

Thank you very much for the reply but now I'm even more confused?!?

In my country (Yugoslavia), there is no RN or LPN but only medical nurse. I worked 8 years in the emergency room in hospital as well as 4 years in cardiology unit. Administering medications, pushing IV's, placing IV lines, assisting the physicians during treatment and taking care of the patient in general was the everyday job. After finishing the school, I received Diploma for finishing the secondary nursing school and have title "medical nurse". I am asking you this because when I called the CGFNS to apply for credential verification and asked them if I should apply for RN or LPN the answer from them was “you apply for both and we will see”!?? My school

Thank you in advance.

In that case, it will come down to what you actually studied in school, and what will be accepted by CGFNS as they have the final word on everything....

Are there any four year programs in your country, or only two year?

CGFNS has a set standard that they follow, best is to let them make a determination............

Is there only one class of nurse in your country, or are there two?

Hi Suzanne

Thanks again for the quick answer,

There are only two-year programs!

So if CGFNS decide that according to US standards I am an LPN what should I do to be an RN? Do hospitals offer programs for LPN->RN!

Thank you,

Suzana :crying2:

There are many "bridge" programs as they are called over here......But first wait and see what they say...........

Hospitals don't offer the programs but community colleges do.....

ok so I have just printed out the New York application form. I am not entirely sure whether this will help me, but I thought that I would ask you for some advice as you seem to be incredibly knowledgable. Nice to find someone who has some idea of what is going on . Anyway I am an Australian Nurse living here in the US I have been thru CGFNS and I can get another copy of their assessment to NY. Is that what I should do now and see what happens?

I am here on an E2 visa as a spouse as my husband is the holder of the working part of the visa. I did have an employment visa for a year but let it lapse as I had a baby and thought that I would get it back once I got this nursing thing sorted out.

We have to reapply for our E2 visa this fall so I would really like to be able to have the nursing thing sorted out so that we could use that to help us remain here in the US. Absolutely love living here and would really hate to have to uproot the children and restart our lives back in Australia. Don't know why but I feel like I belong here more so than I ever did in Australia. Probably was due to living in Hong Kong for the first 15 years of my life and going to the International school there for half the time. But that is a by the by to figuring out how to stay here.

So if anyone knows of a great immigration lawyer as well, I would appreciate it. The one that we had when we moved here did not inspire much confidence, and I never could get much info out of him about nursing apart from telling me to go out and get it then he would be able to help me??????

Anyway thanks in advance for any help or hints in this matter.

Hi,

I'll leave Suzanne to answer your questions about the NY application as she is the expert, but I can offer some advice about immigration as I am also going to Florida. I applied to Florida Hospital for a job and they have accepted me. They have provided an immigration attorney for me, I believe she handles most, if not all, the immigration applications for the hospital's foreign employees. The added bonus is that the hospital is picking up all the expenses and up to now I am very pleased with the way they are handling my application. So I guess what I'm saying is that if you could get yourself a job offer, your employer may well deal with the immigration process for you. It is in their interest to get you fixed up with a green card as quickly as possible once they have hired you so maybe that's something for you to consider. You also have the added advantage of living there already so I'm sure you wouldn't have a problem getting hired.

Hope this helps,

Tina :)

I went to a couple of open days at some local hospitals and non of them seemed that interested in the whole sponsership thing, they told me that once I had my licence in my hot little hand they would have ajob for me in a heartbeat. Maybe I just didn't talk to the right people but I gave up on that avenue after that. Who knows?

They know how long the process can take.............. :)

I would definitely have license in hand, or at least a date set for the exam, which means approval from BON before doing anything....

As most of you know, I have been recommending initial licensure in NY for quite some time. And for those of you that did not heed the warning, you now know why.

New York is three easy applications only, next you take the NCLEX exam, then you get a hard license and can endorse to almost any state afterwards. Because of the requirements of the Special Credentials Verification for New York, you do not have to do any of the running around to obtain your documents. CGFNS will obtain them for you....after you sign the release and send them the money.

NY also requires two short classes that can be done on-line, one on Child Abuse, and the other on Infection. Both are available for about $15 each and take only one hour or so.

NY BON application can be found at www.op.nyed.gov. You only need to submit "Form 1."

The Special Credentials Verification can be found at www.CGFNS.org, as well as the Visa Screen Application.

Once you have received documentation from NY that your credentials have been received and approved, submit payment to Pearson-Vue for the NCLEX exam. www.perasonvue.com. They are the ones that will actually send you the ATT letter, upon approval of the Board of Nursing. Be aware that this ATT (authorization to test) is only good for ninety (90) days. You will have onlt that amount of time to get the exam done in, otherwise you will lose your payment and have to start again.

Hope that this helps................ :balloons:

Most importantly, NY will issue you the license without a Social Security Number.

Sorry if this is going to sound like a stupid question, but I am trying to figure out what you mean by "three easy applications" I went on the website and got Nurse form 1, is that the one that I need or are there others?

I am really hoping that this is all going to work this time. Sorry if you are tearing your hair out thinking that I am a total dimwit for not being able to figure this out, I just want to make sure that I do it right and dot all the i's and cross all the t's if you know what I mean:)

NY licensure requires three applications if you are a foreign grad. You also need the Special Credentials Verification done by CGFNS, as well as Visa Screen Certificate. CGFNS then does all of the work for you.......... :)

Hope that this helps............. :balloons:

so does that mean that I need to fill out the same application three times or are there three different types of forms?

I already have the CGFNS thing, although whether it will do me any good or not I do not know.

I have not done the Visa screen, but am here on an E2 Visa as a spouse if that makes any difference?

1. Application for NY, only the part ONE, if you are a foreign graduate.

2. Special Credentials Verification for NY, this is not the same as the regular CES form, only good for NY.

3. Visa Screen Certificate application. Unless you have a visa that permits you to work, you will need this. This can get you green card status which will give you permanent residency in the US, if that is what you want.

Not sure what else you need to know?
