Nurse making the jump from UK to USA, needing a bit of advice

Hello all,

I am a UK educated and trained nurse looking to move over to the USA. i have passed my NCLEX and have applied for a load of jobs but I still work and live in England so they are obviously reluctant to employ me. I was just wondering if anyone had made the same move and what the differences between british and American nursing are? I understand there is more of a diagnostic aspect and the assessment process is more in depth than it can be here. If anyone could share their day-to-day duties and responisbilities that would be super helpful!

Thank you in advance!

Hi

i am going to America in the next nine months. In the mean time I have moved to Australia to further my experience. My green card first step is approved I am just waiting on my final interview and the embassy here in Sydney. How are you going

I am currently doing my Alevels, I want doing my A-levels..I want to be a CRNA but don't know what course I should take and whether I should do it here in the UK first and then move.

any ideas or advice ?

CRNA requires a RN first and I am not sure if the UK do CRNA

Hi Everyone

Heres the same question but with slightly different circumstances.

I completed my 3 year degree in 2005 as RN (child)

I did a years common foundation which included mental health, maternity & adult nursing.

I have 10 years experience working within paediatrics since qualifying.

I know I need to complete the 2 exams but each forum I look at seems to just state RN so I feel there is no point looking at the exams until I work out if my degree meets the initial requirements.

I am planning on moving to the USA in 2 years time and at that time I will be married to a US citzen who is in the Air force.

My marriage should mean the VISA is ok.

My questions are:

I was wondering if anyone knew the hourly requirements for each field that is required before I sit the exams.?

How do I find out what the requirements are for the different states?

Who would be best to contact to find out about agency requirements and if they accept my degree?

Will being married change anything?

Are there any short courses avaliable in america that would help in me being able to work as a paediatric nurse in the USA?

Thankyou for any information you can give me.

I believe each state is different. You only way you would know is going through CGFNS and get your qualification assessed to see if you meet the criteria. You can not take the NCLEX unless you meet the requirements to register in the state of choice. The NCLEX is part of the registration process.

As mentioned in the previous post starting point would be the state BON and checking out what their requirements are. You could also ask them if they could provide a breakdown of hours

Hi everyone,

My boyfriend is moving to the USA this week to start his residency over there. I am an intern nurse in Ireland due to graduate in March 2017. I hope to move over there a year after I graduate but am not too sure how to go about it and am wondering would I be better off doing a masters before I go over? I am aware that I must undertake the NCLEX but that's really all I know!

Hope someone can help!

In what capacity are you planning on moving over with? What visa are you thinking of?

Hi Renaudnatalie, I graduated in 2013 from UK and I'm also finding the same hurdles as you, in entering the nursing profession in USA. I've tried the CGFNS exam but no luck.

US Nursing system, both in the hospital, and the assessments/testing i

are completely different to that of UK. We had to pick our specialty Before commencing our degree whereas it's the opposite here. I have seldom knowledge / experience in Paeds, OB's & Gynae and Psychiatric nursing. How are we supposed to teach ourselves all these for the CGFNS & NCLEX exams?

But you must have hours in clinical & theory on your school transcript in pedi, OB/GYN, psych, adult and geriatric to be eligible to sit the nclex in the first place.

Theory - yes, v minimal & brief summary. Not practical training. Was told that the CGFNS exam (if passed) was supposed to get foreign nurses equivalent to the level of US nursing graduates.
