I have a friend in the philippines who wants to work as a nurse in california.. he graduated in phil and took the exam.. what are the requirements that he need to work here in CA.? he is moving here in the US the next month.

Another friend of mine wants to work here as well, he has the same case as my first friend but he doesn;t have imigration visa.. my first friend is a US citizen..need help guys

Specializes in Complex pedi to LTC/SA & now a manager.

There are numerous threads in the nurse registration forum regarding difficulty IENs are having obtaining a CA RN license due to lack of concurrency of clinical and theory since 2008.

There is up to a 46% unemployment rate for new grad and experienced nurses in CA. Your non citizen friend will likely have much difficulty finding employment/sponsor even if they are able to obtain an RN license.

Do your friends have paid nursing experience? Are they specialty trained (critical care, NICU, PICU, or, LDRP)?

Specializes in Medical and general practice now LTC.

I suggest your friend reads the Nurse Registration forum on the issues many International Educated nurses are having with CA. Your other friend will need to meet state requirements and pass NCLEX however CA will not accept application without a US SSN which he can't get until in the US with a legal work/immigrant visa. He may need to apply to another state first although CA will do their own assessment once he tries to apply there and will probably see the same issues. Also with current job situation in CA will find it extremely hard to find employer willing to wait for immigrant visa which currently taking 2-10 years approx depending on where he was born
