how to be a nurse in Ontario

Hi im a nurse in the Philippines migrating to Ontario soon.. id like to be a nurse in ontario, just wondering how do i go about in getting the assessment application package that the CNO website mentioned.. i noticed that BC and alberta assessment packages can be downloaded but i couldnt see the link for Ontario.. another thing, i do have a friend in ontario which is also nurse like me.. she recently graduated, no experience at all, after her assessment ,CNO said she still has to undergo an upgrade before shed be eligible to write the CRNE and be an RN .. shes eligible for RPN though.. in my case i do have the experience for about 1128 hours and when i checked the CNO website i passed the 7 requiremnts for internationally educated nurses.. just wondering do i still need to have an upgrade before id be eligible for the CRNE..basically my question is what are the chances that i may need to undergo an upgrade before i can be an RN in ontario..somebody mentioned though that because in the Philippines we only have 4 years in highschool unlike canadians they have it for like 4 years or more, and that alone is one factor why all Filipino RNs need to have an upgrade when they want to be an RPN in Ontario.. i mean with regards to the nursing degree though , i graduated in a 4 year course so does that still apply?.. .anyone who can help me with this and who have the same situation..id very much appreciate the help..

CNO will make their own judgement based on what you submit to them. Follow this link in regards to requesting an application pack http://www.cno.org/en/become-a-nurse/new-applicants/international/requesting-an-application-package/ I would suggest you start sooner rather than later as the process can be long.

Whether you have to do any sort of upgrade will again depend on the CNO we can not predict how they will respond. Any questions like this would be easier to ask them

The assessment application package can be requested online by emailing them and they will send it to you. It is true that the Bachelor of Science in Nursing in the Philippines is not considered to be equivalent to the BScN program here in Ontario.I also know of a lot of RN's from the Philippines who ended up as an RPN.Based on the information that you provided here ,you are a new graduate and do not have any experience which does not help at all. Though it is not the case all the time since there are several others who were able to take the CRNE. As to why ,it would be the CNO who would be able to answer that since they are the ones who are evaluating the credentials.I am currently working as an RN here in Toronto and like you I am a Filipino who migrated in Canada. From my own experience with my application,I was considered for the CRNE and did not take any bridging program based on the following reasons that my nursing education was accepted since I had my graduate degree and I was able to provide them with proof of my previous experience as an RN which is current as well.

Your credentials will be evaluated by an assessor and she will keep you updated of your status regarding the application. It may be disheartening to hear that your 4 year in nursing education is not equivalent to the BScN program here but there are options that the college will provide you and it is up to you to decide which action will you take. It is good though that you will start the process before you come here. Good luck to your application

Hi! thanks a lot for your reply. i appreciate it.. the part were i mentioned bout her being a recent grad and no experience i was referring to a different person a friend of mine.. and your right she was made to do a bridging program.. in my case i graduated 2007 and also had my experience but only for 1128 hours.. with ielts as well,you think that would be enough ? how many years of experience do you have if u don't mind..
