British RGN looking to relocate to USA

Good afternoon everyone

I am due to start my nursing degree in Wales, I have chosen the Adult pathway so I can qualify as RGN at the end of my 3 years. I am looking in relocating to USA after I qualify and I wanted to asks for some advice and any tips you all may have.

I have came across a website called nurses 4 America and they kinda explain the process and the fact that I have to do another test in order to be a qualifies RN in USA.

Did anyone took the leap and moved to USA as a newly qualified nurse? I am looking at California maybe

thank you

Specializes in Medical and general practice now LTC.

UK nurse courses generally do not meet US state requirements and California is one of the hardest to get into and you will require clinical and theory hours in Paeds, Mental Health, Obstetrics and Adult.

Be prepared for difficulties and a long journey and lots of hurdles to jump. Also finding a employer willing to wait a few years for you when regards to work/immigrant visa may be difficult

You can figure out the hurdles to jump without nurses4America, do not give any money to a recruitment agency.

I am a qualified registered nurse with 1 year and half experience. I was also looking to relocate to USA however truthfully it has been a struggle to understand. Luizap i found the agency i aksed questions to weren't very helpful. They didn't seem to know alot! I actually contact a board of Nursing in the certain state I want to relocate to and they were a massive help! It is going to be a long process though!

You will find you will be deficent in clinical and theory hours in some aspects as well. I emailed the Board of Florida to see what their required hours were :

theory:

Medical - 70hrs.

Surgical - 45hrs.

Obsetetrical - 31 hours.

Paediatrics - 32 hours

Psychiatric - 34 hours.

Clinical:

Medical - 127 hours.

Surgical - 104 hours.

Obstetrical - 44 hours.

Paediatrics - 43 hours.

Psychiatric - 53 hours.

Also you will need to apply to your board first then they can review this and review your qualification. They will then either accpet you or deny you. You can attend the board meeting which could work out well. They could refer you to remedial classes, however I have been informed these can be very expensive! When this is done you can then go for the NCLEX exam.

This is all infomation I have found out recently! hope this helps!!! :)

Hey can I ask, did you do your degree in England? If so did you complete all those hours in the theory side? I haven't, this worries me.
