I know that most of you have 15 + years of nursing experience, but I'm ready to leave hospital/inpatient setting. When I did my clinical rotation for community nursing in a junior high school, I knew that I preferred the school setting. I have almost 2 years experience in med/surg (adult), but i would really like to find a school nurse position, I've even considered changing careers to teaching because I enjoy working with kids and it was my second option before i went into nursing school. Should i go for school nursing now?

I would suggest subbing and volunteering in your local area first.

I knew this is what I wanted to do since nursing school. I had a couple years experience in a large family practice and a little over a year experience in home health before I was blessed with my school nurse position (elementary, approx 400 kids). I liked home health a lot and feel like the independence of it helped prepare me for school nursing. We have a great lead nurse in our county that I can call with any questions I might have. That helps also. I found that the other nurses in our county (mostly LPN's actually, I'm only 1 of 2 RN's and the only BSN) have many different backgrounds and years experience. I'm not sure if this helps or answers your question.
Thanks, this helps, I applied for a substitute nurse position. I've heard of recent grads (3months-1 yr experience) getting school nurse positions. I am wondering if that's safe. I have a friend who did camp nursing and she says when a situation occurs that is emergent or can become emergent but you don't have the tools or equipment to handle, call 911. Another thing that concerns me is the liability. I am tired of hospital work because we get blamed , critiziced, and told that we have no excuse when something goes wrong. It doesn't matter how many patients we have or how many are calling at the same time, that's why im considering teaching instead.
