Working for the State of WV

U.S.A. West Virginia

Published

Friend accepted a job at a state facility about 2 months ago. So far she is doing well. Anybody else on here who works for the state? Any input good or bad?

It really depends on what department or facility you work for. There are some nice office type jobs and even traveling jobs (statewide or a specific area) for RNs. But again there are so many state positions available. You have the state mental hospitals, acute care hospital(s), health departments, long term facilities, home health then more along the lines of medicare/medicaid inspector, working to gather statistical information, actually a multitude of different positions/

Generally (not always) the pay is below what hospitals/other types of facilities pay. Some of the facilities also do have staffing problems from what I have heard and require quite a bit of mandatory overtime.

There is a poster on here that works at one of the state mental hospitals I think and if I am not mistaken he likes it. So it really depends on the exact type of job you are looking at.

Sharpe. Sorry bout not specifying that, I forgot about Bateman. OOPS!!

I have known a couple of RNs that went to Bateman. One left but I havent heard the reasons why. From what I have been told there is quite a bit of mandation. I considered applying there at one time but was told the pay was around 20 dollars an hour. For that area and being mandated frequently that isnt a lot.

The pay at Sharpe is even less than that, starting out. The average for an RN starting out is about $38K and they are not paying it.
