Working as a nurse in NYC

Published

Hi, I'm doing my pre reqs for nursing school and will be going in for an ADN in Fall. Right now I'm in Arizona and pretty much have a job lined up when I graduate. I was wondering how hard it would be to get a job in NYC with an ADN and do they make enough to have a decent life living in the city or is it way more expensive than what they make? I'm just trying to compare the lifestyle you would be able to have in NYC compared to here. Here you start at approximately 25/hr and a 1 bedroom apt is 600-1,000.

Thanks!

Josh

Try looking up some threads about new grads looking for NYC jobs. There are many who have been looking for a while and still can't find a job. It can be quite competitive to get a job in NYC in a hospital, especially. The bigger hospitals usually want a BSN nurse though. Also, some hospitals have a hiring freeze now. Have you ever been to NYC? It's a great place, fun, exciting, but can be very expensive to live. I live right next to NYC, in NJ, and pay alot less rent than some of my friends in NYC. The salary for new nurses in NYC can vary, but usually about $30-32/hr, but the rent for a 1 bedroom in a decent area is usually over $1200+, not always including heat (which can be expensive since it gets cold here in the east coast). I know people paying $1100 just for a studio, and not the nicest areas. If you want a very nice area, it will be more like $2000+/month.

Plus, everything else is more expensive in NYC. You may get lucky, but I would advice you to look for a job way ahead of time before you graduate, and a place to live. It's not always that easy to get the best, least expensive apts in NYC. There can be waiting lists for those too. Or just not that available all the time, at least not in the decent areas. Or you can try living in an outer borough, not Manhattan which is the most expensive.

Yeah figured it would be difficult. It would probably be better to start out here in AZ and maybe get a travel assignment there and get hired on full time. And no I haven't even been to NYC but I love big cities and the whole subway thing (took a trip to London a few years back). Thinks for the info!
