Working in CA

I was talking to a nurse who recently moved here (southern Virginia) from California. She mentioned to me that even though there is only supposed be up to 5 patients per nurse, that usually there weren't any CNA's and the nurse had total patient care instead of having someone to delegate to...which doesn't seem all that great to me. She didn't really go into any detail, but mentioned it to me since I'm moving to southern california in June of this year.

If anyone could give me any information regarding the nurse:patient ratio and about CNA's out there, I'd be appreciative. I want to have at least somewhat of an idea for when I begin work out there

I think it depends on the hospital. I know at one hospital that there are 1:5 ratios for the general med surg floors and CNAs (usually 2 who carry 6 - 7 patients each) to help out the RNs. You need to contact the individual hospital unit to find out more. Good luck!

hello, i'm currently working in LA(pm me for the hospital)MS floor. we have 5 patients 3 primary nursing,1 cna in between unit(horrible!)they just do their routine, call lights answered by nurse. This is a tough hospital.never will renew my contract as a Travelling nurse.hospital is cheap, no stocks in the unit..search the 4 units to find what you want..hope this helps. good sam is good accdg to the, white mem, LA county.hope this help. goodluck

I work in a place thats 1:5 or 1:4 with nursing assistant.

We only do primary nursing or total care if we are short of nursing assistant. It's either you have 3 walkie-talkie pt as your primary nursing (w/o aide) and thats only your pts 3! Or if you have 5 or 4 you have to pick 1 to be primary pt (again no aide). And the rest of your 3-4 pt you'll have aide.
