Wives/Parents Entering as Navy Nurses

Hi,

Im 30 with kids and a spouse. Currently pursuing nursing school and really want to commission into the Navy as a Nurse. I already live in San Diego (one of the big 3 hospital stations) and I grew up in the navy so I’m familiar with the life style. I was hoping to hear from other women or men who entered into the Navy already married with kids. I would love to hear of your experience. This has been a dream of mine but has been delayed due to my weight and some school road blocks. I do have a couple questions as well. I’d love to hear back from any active duty members! I’m hoping to apply for the Candidate Program but if I don’t get accepted then I plan to get a few years of experience at my current job before trying to commission in.

1) Are you automatically assigned to Med-Surg or is there a chance to get into a specialty like L&D or ED straight out the gate?

2)What does your work schedule look like? Do you work 3 days a week or is it different?

3)If you had a family prior to entering ,what was your process like from boot camp all the way to your dirt station?
