Hi all,
I am just wondering if those of you who have had your Wisdom teeth removed as adults could share you experiences with me.
I am scheduled to have them out in a couple weeks and am quite nervous about it and am wondering how you all made out. Was there a ton of pain? How long until you were able to go about your normal activities ? Did you have sedation or did you just get local numbing and suck it up?
I am booked for couscous sedation, but I am thinking about just getting the local, if you did this how bad was it?

I had conscious sedation. I was 25. My mom drove me to and from the oral surgeon's office because you can't drive after conscious sedation.
I remember having little to no pain but take that with a grain of salt because I have a very high pain tolerance- to the point where when I broke my leg when I was 7, before I had the X-ray no one believed it could be broken because I wasn't crying or complaining enough when they touched it and I got through major brain surgery when I was 19 with little more than tylenol. I took motrin for maybe a day or 2 and I ate a full meal the night of the procedure. I worked either that night or the day after. It took no time to get back to normal activities (but, again, I went to a concert the night that I was released from the hospital after my brain surgery so I don't claim to be the typical experience).

I just had them out a few weeks ago (I'm a late bloomer I guess). I had conscious sedation because I'm a weenie about procedures. Honestly, most of the recovery was from the sedation, not the procedure. I wasn't in terrible pain. Didn't need the pain meds they gave me. Only had to be selective about what I ate for a few days. Back to normal in 5 days.
I didn't have any complications though. I hear dry socket is pretty common and can cause pain.
Ps I do not have a high pain tolerance. Like I said, I'm a weenie but just had a good experience with this.

I had mine out at age 28. I had a local, drove myself there and home. I had a terrible time trying to swallow the Tylenol #3 (yes, this was a long time ago). I worked night shift that night taking Motrin. But like the previous poster, I have a pretty high pain tolerance. I also had little swelling, while I've others have a great deal, and need a day or two recovery.
How bad did just getting the local hurt? That is really what I am afraid of, as I had a TERRIBLE experience with an oral surgeon a few years ago when I broke my Mandible and now I am terrified of the needle!! The other stuff won't bother me. Was the needle excruciatingly uncomfortable or no worse then when you have a cavity? I am getting two lowers out and I know numbing in the lower is much more complicated then when you have it done on the top.
I really do not want the sedation because it makes you feel like crap for a couple of days, but its the needle.

Conscious sedation for sure. It is reversible, and you don't want to remember this.
Relax and enjoy the buzz.

As much as giving medical advice, is against TOS,
Mine were removed with just local...the trigeminal nerve is injected in the space between our mandible and maxilla..... Provides adequate local anesthesia...
And many dentist use nitrous oxide, and you do not even feel the local anesthesia....nitrous is instantly reversed
Not asking for medical advise, just asking for other's experiences.

I had 4 of mine removed in college, oral surgeon, conscious sedation. I had some pain afterward and I did take pain meds but not horrendous pain. Able to return to regular activities the next day.

I had mine removed with twilight sedation. I was very relaxed and not bothered at all ...just a little embarrassed when I sobered up and realized that I'd been playfully been calling the doctor "*****" the whole time. "Thanks, ****! You did a great job, *****!"
I also pulled my sutures out in the car on the way home. Ran out of Norco early (I think that's what they gave me) because the pain was too much between doses. It gradually decreased over several days.

I had conscious sedation. I didn't have much pain at all post procedure. Never took the pain pills, and not out of heroism. I didn't need them. And I don't claim to have a great pain tolerance either.
I did vomit a couple times post-op. Mine were impacted and I had bleeding that dumped into my stomach during surgery, so I did end up puking up blood twice afterwards. Once that was up and out, my stomach was fine as well.
