Will be New Grad: Best way to get a MB/PP job?

I have been told by some that I should get one year training in Med-Surg which will help to broaden my scope and allow me to go into any nursing speciality. The only catch is... I was did not like the Med-Surg clinicals...although I have great respect for Med-Surg nurses...I just don't think it's for me.

I am currently at the tail end of nursing school and really liked Postpartum and the mother baby unit during my clinicals. I also really liked public health nursing, which was the area of nursing which really made me want to go into nursing.

My questions are:

Should I put in one year of Med-Surg?

What is the best way to get into Postpartum/Mother baby as a new grad? If I cannot get into an L&D position as a new grad, what other areas can I do (besides med-surg) that would make me more eligible in working on the PP/MBU? If I decided to work as a public health nurse and then go into MB/PP when I find the right opportunity, would I look marketable to a hiring manager on a MBU/PP?

My passion is MB and PP and would really like to work on that specific unit, but I'm afraid that there aren't enough positions out there. I am currently living in San Diego and have applied to a new grad program, but they are few and far between...and even then...it's very competitive.

Any advice on how to get into PP/MBU nursing as a new grad?? or to make myself more marketable in the meantime would be greatly appreciated!!
