Will they fail me for this (PEDS clinical)

Published

It was the end of our clinical shift and one of the nurses asked if we (my instructor and I) were interested in putting an NG tube in we said yes. I had faith in my skills, (I havent done it since my very first semester). I thought I had everything, my instructor said walk me through it. I verbally walked through it (from what I remembered).. I completely forgot aspirate stomach contents and check with pH paper. She said alright let's go. She double checked that I had all my equipment (syringe missing and paper) and continued to proceed anyway. I obviously at this point had no idea I was missing anything. I placed the NG tube in, she said did you measure? I hadn't, it was a step I forgot. She saw that I hadn't before insertion but didnt stop me. She then said where's the syringe, I felt so scared at this time, because I hadn't grabbed one, she knew before she asked me this because she double checked all my supplies. So she ran out to grab one and pH paper. By the time she got back my patient had vommited the NG tube out, and it had to be placed again. I opted out and she placed it. The entire situation was very frightening and at the end of it she told me that I did great, I dont feel like I did great. Will I be failed for this? Can she say I have done great then fail me?
