Why do you love Med/Surg?

Published

Hey all!

I wanted to start a thread for med/surg nurses to explain what they love (and dislike sometimes) about the specialty of med/surg. Go for it:)

This will sound cliche ish, but I believe I was born to be a nurse. I LOVE bedside nursing, but really dislike the politics that come with it. I really enjoy those moments when I can interact with my patients, and not feel the pressure to clock out on time. I've done MS for some time, and want to move on, but not sure to what.

I like the diversity and experience that med/surg offers. I see so many different diagnoses, procedures, medications, populations, etc. I literally learn something new every single shift. I love the variety. I also float to a m/s/tele floor so I also get to work on my rhythms now and then which I also like. What I dislike...having up to 11 patients on the 3-11 shift when we are understaffed and super busy. Normal is 7 to 8, which is also too much. I HATE having so many patients because instead of learning and giving excellent care and being able to educate my patients properly, I am just running around trying to get everything done. That's the only reason I want out of floor nursing.

Well, I'm not a nurse yet (so excited....I got into an RN program for this fall :)), but I work on Med/Surg as a PCT, and I LOVE it! I really enjoy the diversity of it. There are times when it slows down a little, and we can all catch our breath. Then, there are times that it is so crazy busy that 12 hours are over before I know it. I also like that fact that it provides the opportunity to maintain skills on so many levels. I will be able to confidently work with a variety of patients when pulled to different floors. I know I haven't even started school yet, but I work closely with my nurses and have some understanding of the role and its challenges. Overall, I don't see myself wanting to work in a different specialty.
