Why do you like being a nurse? What drives you to do better? What motivates you to keep pressing on?
I'm working on an inspiration board to carry me through nursing school. I'm gonna have Bible verses, quotes, reasons I want to be a nurse, and hopefully, some words from experienced nurses!
Will you guys help me with my little project?
Thanks!

Sigh. I bet if you looked through the forums, you'd find plenty for your project. Good luck.

Wow. The response to this thread is underwhelming (surprise! :)).
Are we all here at AN grumbling malcontents or what? wink wink elbow jab to all my "been there done that" battle-weary compradres.
All right then. I'll throw a bone to the starry-eyed OP.
I like the commaraderie between colleagues, ancillary and medical staff... from the docs straight across to the wonderful people that come along and clean/prepare my room for the next patient(s).
I like learning.
I like quirky, pain in the ass patients; I especially love the grumpy little old men. Bald ones most of all.
I like solving problems.
I like collaborating.
I like knowing stuff.
I like it when I walk into a room and the patient tells me, "Oh! I was so glad to find out you were scheduled to work today."

Always try to live life in view of its possibilities, not its limitations. :)
If it's to be, it's up to me.
Whether you think you can, or you think you can't......you're right!
Most people are about as happy as they make up their minds to be.
Happiness is contagious. Be a carrier!

I like when I hear from a patient or their family ...
"Im so glad your my nurse today" or they come up to me in the community and say "We can't thank you enough for compassionate care of our Mother" etc.
Bottom line: Its nice to hear that you truely are making a difference in someone's life.
P.S. A few of my friends and I would listen to the soundtrack from "Rocky Balboa" on the way to school or clinicals and not only was it funny but it was also motivational.. I strongly suggest study groups and keep in mind why you want to be a nurse and what your dream nursing assignment is.

I'm not a nurse yet... on the waiting list for a program... but here is one thread you could check out on this site with lots of quotes:

You can also search "why I like nursing" or other such phrases to find previous posts! Good luck!!!
By the way - I like being a CNA because I can help make a scary, uncertain time in someone's life (a hospital stay) a little more comfortable.

This may be a little much but.....
I started college right after high school. Decided to major in Broadcasting, cause I was gonna be the next Brian Williams. Until I found out that I would probably never make much in front of the camera and I didn't like the back of the camera. Switched to accounting, spent 3.5 learning that I would rather work with people than numbers. My grandmother was a nurse for 45 years, she passed away recently.
I like taking care of people. I want to help them.
I love when I tell patients that I'll see them the next night, and they're happy to hear that.
I provide comfort when someone's dying.
I'm the one who spends 12 hours doing everything for them.
I get paid.

Today a patient called the unit to thank me for being his nurse (I had discharged him on Tuesday). I was sad because I was at lunch and didn't get to talk to him, but on the plus side, my nurse manager took the call. But that absolutely made my day! Most of my patients express gratefulness when I am already taking care of them, but it is a priceless moment when someone singles you out for excellent care.
I love being the one that knows everything about my patient. I also actually like the days when I enter the room and the patient/family is immediately hostile about something, and I am able to get to the root of the problem and come up with an appropriate solution. Finally, I am truly growing to enjoy my coworkers. It takes me a long time to get attached to people, but my workplace is so supportive and helpful, and the teamwork is excellent.

I like being a nurse for several reasons. First and foremost I love helping people. I love the feeling when I have made someone comfortable or help them to forget they are sick. Secondly, I get paid a decent wage. I'm 23 years old and most people my age do not make over 30/hr with "just" an associates degree. Heck, not even with a bachelors. I also like the art and science of nursing. I like being able to try to fix things that go wrong with my patients. Overall I love being nurse. Even though I make my mistakes and feel like giving up I know that this is the career I was meant to be in.
