Why is there no foreign language requirement for nursing students

Published

All nursing students, especially those graduating with a BSN, should have to meet some spanish proficiency requirements. I think Spanish would be the most useful in the U.S. because of our growing Hispanic and Latinx population. I’m an RN and have found how it can be beneficial to be able to communicate directly with patients when you can speak their language. I don’t speak Spanish (I’m Arabic) but have committed to learning it. I just feel betrayed by the program I graduated from because they required us to take general ED courses in crap like political science and creative arts but no Spanish. So why not teach foreign languages to nursing students so that they can communicate effectively with non-white populations?
