Why is it difficult for management to change my schedule?

I'm a new med-surg nurse working 12-hr shifts. I feel I'm burning out before I even get started. I have talked with my manager about shorter shifts on a few occasions but she has resisted so far. I can see the difficulty of scheduling a variety of shifts, but it's done on my unit all the time. We have new grad part-timers and PRNs, too.

Also, why do some say 12-hr shifts give you more time to get the work done when there's another nurse taking over your assignment after 8 hrs? That point of view just doesn't make sense to me.

I want to stay curious, to work and learn, but stress and fatigue are killing my motivation.
